DAVIS, Calif. — Cal Poly's Devin Bennett finished second in the men's decathlon at the Big West Conference Championships on Saturday at Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track.
Moving up two spots from a year ago, Bennett compiled 6,853 points over the two days.
The junior closed by running easily the fastest 1,500-meter time among the 11 competitors on site, at 4 minutes, 34.37 seconds — 6.41 ahead of Long Beach State senior Garrett Demirjian (the champion, scoring 7,014).
Mustang teammate Nick Ahrold finished right behind Bennett, at 6,403, to also become an all-conference honoree by virtue of placing in the top three.
Ahrold, a sophomore, had career-best performances in the 110 hurdles (at 15.64 seconds) and the pole vault (13 feet, 9 inches).
Cal Poly freshman Ted Scranton added a sixth-place 6,049. His discus throw of 138-7 was the best of the day.
Starting later in the afternoon, Mustang freshman Jessica Davis took ninth in the women's heptathlon, at 4,361.
Davis had PRs in all three second-round events: 15-10 in the long jump, 109-5 in the javelin throw and 2:31.85 in the 800.
Hawai'i senior Kaleigh Morrison won among the 15 in attendance, with 5,210.
The rest of the conference championship events will be held next weekend.
