WALNUT, Calif. — A day after two members of the Cal Poly track and field team posted times ranking in the top five in school history in their respective events, one more Mustang did the same Friday night, and eight teammates also established personal records at the 56th annual Mt. SAC Relays in Hilmer Lodge Stadium.
Chris Frias finished the 5,000-meter run in 13 minutes, 59.80 seconds, which ranks No. 5 on the program's all-time top-10 list.
The time came despite running a majority of the race with only one shoe, as he was unheeled early on.
Even so, Frias (pictured at right in 2013) managed to finish 10th in the men's Olympic Development Elite competition, all while improving his PR by 13.51 seconds. (Earlier this season, the senior also broke the school record in the 10K, which had stood for 31 years.)
All the other results came in the open/university divisions. In that men's 5,000, redshirt freshman Dimitri Voytilla was 23rd, at 14:25.55, which bettered his old PR by 24.97 seconds.
Four of the other career-best performances came in the women's 1,500 alone.
Hanna Edwards, a junior, was 24th in a 147-runner field, with a time of 4:26.78, slightly ahead of 27th-place Sara Van Dyke (4:27.07), a sophomore. Both exceeded their previous pinnacles by more than five seconds each.
Another sophomore, Ashley Windsor, was 40th at 4:28.73, while senior Diana George added a 56th-place 4:32.81.
The men's 1,500 also saw the Mustangs put up solid times, as senior David Cardona was 28th among 121 competitors, at 3:49.97, ahead of freshman Clayton Hutchins in 53rd place at 3:52.15.
Kristen Narum was 52nd in the women's 800 (at a personal-best 2:12.13 for the junior), just in front of senior Elaina Cromer in 60th (2:12.91).
Ajah Love also had a PR in the 100-meter dash, at 11.95 seconds. In a different heat, Daijah Joe-Smith ran the same time, as the tandem of former Sacramento-area sprint standouts tied for 39th. They also ran in the 200, as Love, a sophomore, was 35th at 24.41 seconds, with Joe-Smith, a freshman, following at 24.59 (44th).
In the men's 100, senior Jamison Jordan was 50th, at 10.75, with junior Walter Finney behind in 65th at 10.90.
Among 98 student-athletes in the men's 800, senior John Guerrero came in 47th, at 1:53.99. Additionally, freshman Ben Hartinger added a 37th-place time of 14.84 in the men's 110 hurdles.
In the women's triple jump, sophomore Kendal Nielsen was 14th, with a mark of 39 feet, 0.25 inches.
Sophomore Rachel Bush was 20th in the women's 5,000, at 17:06.35. Then, less than two hours before midnight, freshman Kylie Nishisaka also put forth a PR, coming in 26th in the 'B' race, at 17:13.04.
