HONOLULU — After claiming the doubles point in close fashion Monday afternoon, the Hawai'i men's tennis team went on to win a Big West Conference dual match at home over Cal Poly, 6-1 at the UH Tennis Complex.
Freshman Ben Donovan and senior Jurgen De Jager evened doubles play by topping Chas Okamoto and Chris Meyer 8-5, but the Rainbow Warriors, playing on their Senior Day, prevailed on the No. 2 court, 8-6, to clinch.
De Jager (pictured at right) came back in singles play to bring Cal Poly to within 2-1. He sidelined Danilo Casanova at the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-3.
In the process, De Jager improved to 10-1 in duals this season.
At No. 6 singles, fellow senior Matt Thomson won the first set over Pavel Liska, but Liska rallied to secure a 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory that ended the day.
The loss ended a five-match winning streak for Cal Poly (7-9, 2-1), which has still won seven of its past nine.
For the first of three consecutive non-conference matches, the Mustangs will return home to host No. 23 Boise State (16-3) at 1 p.m. Sunday.
