FRESNO, Calif. — Propelled by wins in 11 of 18 events, the Cal Poly men's track and field team won 115-67 in a season-opening dual meet against Fresno State on Saturday, while the Mustangs tied the Bulldogs 95-95 on the women's side. Throwing events were held at Warmerdam Field on campus; other events began at Veterans Memorial Stadium in nearby Clovis.
Mustangs sophomore Nick Bultman came in second place in the men's hammer throw, at a personal-record 180 feet, 5 inches.
Bultman's mark ranks No. 7 in school history.
Also for Cal Poly, seniors Chris Frias and Sean Davidson, looking to build upon their standout cross country seasons from this past fall, dominated the 3,000-meter field for a 1-2 finish, as each vastly surpassed their top times in the event from a year ago.
Frias won at 8 minutes, 6.66 seconds, followed by Davidson at 8:08.47 for more than a 23-second gap ahead of their challengers.
Junior sprinter Walter Finney won the 200 at 21.63, which would've ranked as the second-fastest time on the team over the course of last spring. Additionally, although the group finished as the runner-up, Finney, freshman Isaiah Gibson, senior Jamison Jordan and freshman Joey Sanfilippo combined to clock an impressive 41.30 in the 400 relay (just two-hundredths back of their Bulldogs counterpart).
Freshman Ivy Adair bounded 22-6 for second place in the long jump, and another underclassman, sophomore Ricky Strehlow, put forth a mark of 47-6.5 in the triple jump. Each performance would've claimed the No. 1 spot in those events on the team's 2013 best-marks list.
On the women's side, sophomore Kendal Nielsen (pictured at right) made some history of a stature similar to Bultman.
She handily won the triple jump, at 40 feet, 7.75 inches. The mark nearly matched her season-best from a year ago (40-8), which went down as No. 5 in school history.
Freshman Daijah Joe was the runner-up in the 100, at 12.14 seconds, which was a smidgen better than the Mustangs' best last season (12.15).
Sophomore Ajah Love won the 200 for the Mustangs with a PR of 24.32, followed by Joe at 24.45.
Sophomore Danielle Bryan also matched her PR while winning the high jump, clearing 5-7.
