Barber, Pang Lead Cal Poly on First Day of Gael Classic

MORAGA, Calif. — Cal Poly sophomore Corey Pang nearly beat a top-85 opponent, and senior teammate Devin Barber won a total of three times at the Gael Classic at Korth Tennis Complex on Saturday.
Pang opened singles' top flight with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Sonoma State's Daniel Holz. Then in the Round of 16, Pang (pictured at right) won a set off the ITA's 81st-ranked player, Cal junior Oskar Wikberg (the tournament's top seed), before the former Swedish U-18 champion rallied for a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (11-9) win.
Barber, meanwhile, made it to the quarterfinals thanks to a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9-7) victory over Thomas Takemoto from San Francisco and a 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 1-0 (11-9) win opposite UC Davis rival Brett Bacharach. He'll next face the Aggies' No. 1 player, Alec Adamson (the bracket's No. 4 seed).
In Flight B, freshman Dan Cardiff will also represent Cal Poly in the quarters, by virtue of defeating Sonoma State's Logan Liddell 6-1, 6-0 and Denver's Zach Fryer 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (13-11). He's now matched up with Wil Martin of Saint Mary's.
In the first doubles flight, Barber and Pang also earned an 8-7 (7-3) win against Denver's Yannik James and Diogo Rocha.
Similarly in doubles, sophomore Garrett Auproux and freshman Lucas Lesoeur opened with an 8-7 (7-5) win over Bacharach and Adam Levie before also prevailing in a Round of 16 tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4) over the hosts' Martin and Sam Bloore.
Meanwhile in Flight B, Mustang senior Naveen Beasley and sophomore Tim Tan defeated Vincent Paganetti and Sullivan Roche from Sonoma State 8-5.
The originally scheduled first day of the tournament, Friday, was actually canceled due to rain. Action will conclude Sunday.
