SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The CSUN women's soccer team netted a golden goal a minute into the second overtime on Sunday afternoon to leave Alex G. Spanos Stadium with a 2-1 comeback win against Cal Poly.
Six minutes after a water break was called for amid unusual 93-degree heat for the Central Coast in October, the Mustangs scored in the 27th when Emily Hansen passed ahead to Lydia Anderson (pictured at right). After the goalkeeper came out to the top of the penalty area, Anderson flicked a roller into the momentarily open net.
Play was mostly even throughout, with each side getting off four shots by halftime.
Following another water break (68'), CSUN equalized in the 76th when Kendall Moskal put away a low drive to the near post off a free kick in from the right side by Kourtney Kutscher.
In the second overtime's opening minute, Nicole Thompson blasted a free kick from about 40 yards out (five yards in from her left touchline) to the middle of the 18-yard box. She found Hannah Wissler, who sent a header over to Lyndsey Preston for a sudden shot just inside the right post.
Katarina Drake forced the Matadors into saves in the 44th and 61st minutes, and Elise Krieghoff (11'), Megan Abutin (70'), Kendra Bonsall (70') and Hansen (92') also put attempts on target.
Alyssa Giannetti made five saves for Cal Poly, which had opened Big West Conference play earlier in the week with a 3-0 victory at previously-No. 23 Long Beach State.
Making her 61st career start, senior midfielder Sara Lancaster moved past 2002 NSCAA All-American Brooke Flamson to tie Jen Burk (1993-95, 1997) and Sierra Simmons (2002-05) for the 15th-most starts in school history.
The Mustangs will stay at home to take on UC Davis on Friday (at 7 p.m.) and Hawai'i on Sunday (noon) for Alumni Weekend.
