
Cal Poly Opens Big West Schedule With 3-0 Victory Over 49ers

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Nicole Wheeler, Allie Bégin and Sara Lancaster all scored goals as Cal Poly opened Big West Conference women's soccer play with a 3-0 victory over Long Beach State on Friday night at George Allen Field.
Wheeler (pictured at right) tallied her first goal of the season in the 26th minute with a header off a corner kick from Megan Abutin.
Bégin gave the Mustangs a 2-0 advantage six minutes into the second half. Assisted by Lydia Anderson, Bégin scored her second goal of the year, taking the cross from the left side of the box and curling her shot into the upper-right corner.
Lancaster wrapped it up with her first goal of the season in the 76th minute. Abutin notched her second assist of the match and sixth of the year. She has 16 points this season, second in the Big West to teammate Elise Krieghoff (21 points).
Long Beach State was ranked No. 23 in the nation two weeks ago.
Alyssa Giannetti recorded three saves for Cal Poly while Long Beach State's Ashton McKeown notched six.
Cal Poly, which claimed the Big West regular-season title a year ago, returns home to host CSUN on Sunday at noon in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
