
Northern Colorado Defeats Mustangs, 3-1 , Season Opener

GREELEY, Colo. – The Cal Poly volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a 3-1 loss to host Northern Colorado in the team's first match of the Northern Colorado/Colorado State Tournament on Friday. Set scores went 25-15, 25-17, 22-25 and 25-18 in the season opener for both schools.
Cal Poly returns to the court on Saturday with a pair of matches. Cal Poly will play Baylor at 10:30 am in Greeley and then travel to Fort Collins to play Colorado State at 6 pm.
Despite a career-high 17 kills coming from senior outside hitter Megan McConnell, Cal Poly could not overcome the attack of Northern Colorado. McConnell's 17 kills came on 46 swings with six erros (.239). Fellow senior Chelsea Hardin added 10 kills while true freshman Taylor Gruenewald tallied nine kills on 21 swings (two errors).
Sophomores Hannah Schleis (thee kills) and Maddie Kuber each added three kills while two-time All-American, Jennifer Keddy, saw action for the first time in over a year and added a pair of kills.
Cal Poly as a team hit .116 while Northern Colorado hit .283 for the match. Northern Colorado also held a 68-52 advantage in digs and a 7-5 advantage in blocks.
Kubber dished out 32 assists on the night along with 12 digs while sophomore Nicole Kessler added 12 with McConnell earning a double-double with 10 digs.
Gruenewald led the Mustangs with four total blocks, three assisted while Keddy had one solo and one assisted block.
Northern Colorado had three players record 10 or more kills led by Andrea Spaustat with 14. Brianna Strong and Alyssa Wilson added 11 and 10 respectively.
