Mustangs Edged by Cal State Northridge in Home Finale

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior Alexa Lee prevailed in both singles and doubles action during her final match on Mustang Courts, but the Cal Poly women's tennis team was topped by Cal State Northridge 5-2 during its spring dual match home finale on Sunday afternoon.
Lee opened action by teaming with freshman Louise Oxnevad in doubles play to post an 8-5 victory at the No. 1 position against Cal State Northridge's Anna Yang and Sabrina Man-Son-Hing. Mustang juniors Ane McPike and Jen Cornea, however, dropped a 9-8 decision at No. 2 against Lorraine Cheung and Maria Pistalu. The Matadors then wrapped up the doubles point at No. 3 with Alexis Marquez and Jessica Warren besting Mustang freshmen Haley Kepler and Anna Klavins, 8-3.
Lee returned in singles play to slide past Man-Son-Hing at No. 3, 6-3, 6-1. Cal Poly's remaining Sunday triumph occurred at No. 6 with junior Gabrielle Gatewood recovering to top Marquez, 6-5, 2-6, 7-5. At No. 1, Oxnevad fell versus Pistalu (4-6, 6-1, 6-3) while Cornea was bested at No. 2 versus Yang (6-3, 6-4). McPike fell at No. 4 against Cheung, 6-4, 6-4. After dropping the first set 7-6 and the second 2-1, Cal Poly junior Kathryn Webb was forced to retire at No. 5 versus Warren.
Cal Poly (3-16, 1-6) completes regular season action when visiting No. 43 Long Beach State on Saturday, April 13 and UC Riverside on Sunday, April 14.
