
No. 5 Hawai'i Sweeps Cal Poly in Three Sets

HONOLULU, HI – Cal Poly went on the road and faced a hot hitting No. 5 University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine volleyball team that swept the Mustangs in three sets on Saturday. Hawai'i won by set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-13.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 8-9 overall and 2-2 in Big West Conference matches while UH improves to 15-3 and 5-1 in conference matches.
UH hit .405 in the three set match while Cal Poly was held to a .159 hitting percentage. UH held a 5-2 advantage in aces with the Mustangs committing nine service errors. UH had a 38-21 edge in digs and 5-2 advantage in blocks.
Cal Poly was led by Hawai'i native, Chelsea Hardin, with nine kills. True freshman Taylor Gruenewald tallied eight kills with one hitting error (.500). Megan McConnell, Jennifer Keddy and Hannah Schleis each added three kills each.
Maddie Kuber handed out 15 assists with Steffi Sooter recording a team-high five digs.
Emily Hartong led UH with 11 kills while Nikki Taylor added 10 kills. Tai Manu-Olevao and Jade Voster had eight and seven kills respectively.
UH held a three point lead (6-3) in the opening set on a kill by Tai Manu-Olevao and held a 10-6 lead on a kill by Hartong. UH went on a 3-0 mini run and held an 18-11 lead late in the set. Cal Poly came back on a 3-0 run of their own cutting the lead to 18-14. Hawai'i would go on to win the set, 25-17. UH hit .333 in the set while limiting the Mustangs to a .188 hitting percentage. Gruenewald led the team with four kills in the set. Hartong had five kills for UH.
A 5-0 run by UH opened up a 7-2 lead in the second set forcing a Cal Poly timeout. UH expanded its lead to 14-7 on a kill by Nikki Taylor when Kuber and Keddy responded with kills to cut the lead to six (18-12). UH closed the set with three straight points and a 25-16 win. UH hit .467 in the set with the Mustangs hitting .267.
The third set was all Hawai'i as they jumped out to a quick 12-2 lead and a Cal Poly timeout. UH kept the pressure up and maintained a 10 point advantage late in the set and won, 25-13. UH hit .429 in the set while holding Cal Poly to a .000 hitting percentage.
