
No. 57 Cal Poly Men's Tennis Falls to No. 3 UCLA, 4-0

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 57th-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team lost its opening match of the 2013 ITA Kick-Off Weekend to third-ranked UCLA, 4-0, at the Los Angeles Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 2-1 in the dual match season while UCLA improves to 2-0.
After multiple weather delays, play finally opened on Saturday with UCLA winning the doubles point. Dennis Mkrtchian and Alex Brigham teamed to defeat the Cal Poly duo of Marco Comuzzo and Jurden De Jager on the third court, 8-1.
UCLA sealed the doubles point with an 8-2 in on the second court with Adrien Puget and Karue Sell defeating Gannon Daynes and Matt Thomson. Andre Dome and Joardan Bridge were down, 7-4, on the first court to Marcos Giron and Dennis Novikov when the doubles point was decided.
When singles play opened up, No. 12 Giron was too much for No. 89 Dome as the UCLA player won in straight-sets, 6-4 and 6-4, to put UCLA up 2-0.
Sell put UCLA up 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Naveen Beasley on the sixth court and Novikov sealed the win for the Bruins on the second court with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Comuzzo on the second court.
Bridge was up, 4-2, in the second set after dropping the first, 7-6 to Puget on the third court when play was called. No. 41, Mkrtchian won the first set, 7-6, and was up 3-2 over freshman Derek Klein on the fourth court when play was halted.
De Jager was up, 5-4, in the second set after Clay Thompson won the first set 6-1.
Cal Poly will play either No. 50 South Florida or No. 57 BYU in the consolation match. Time of match has yet to be determined.
