
Cal Poly Travels to Bakersfield, Set to Host UC Santa Barbara

This Week....: The Mustangs will play a non-conference match on Tuesday this week when the team travels to Bakersfield to take on the Roadrunners for a 7 pm match. On Saturday, conference play resumes when the Mustangs host Central Coast rival UC Santa Barbara in Mott Gym at 7 pm. All matches will have live stats available at GoPoly.com.
• For the seventh year, institutions will air all home and conference matches on BigWest.TV, and beginning with the 2012 season, all BigWest.TV events will air free of charge. Head to http://www.bigwest.org/ ...this week for weekly event schedules.
What's coming up: Following the UCSB match the Mustangs will remain at home and host Hawai'i and Cal State Northridge on Oct. 5 and 6. Both matches are set for 7 pm.

CSU Bakersfield: The Roadrunners enter the week with a 6-7 overall record having won their last four matches... Debora Araujo leads the team with 4.08 kills per set with Kelsee Sawyer adding 2.37. Fernanda Goncalves does the setting for the team dishing out 10.02 assists per set. Araujo accounts for 30 percent of CSUB's offense.
UC Santa Barbara: The Gauchos enter the week with a 7-9 overall record and are 0-2 to start conference play having lost to UC Irvine and Long Beach State. UCSB has lost its last four matches including a four set match with No. 17 San Diego. Leah Sully leads the team with 3.83 kills per set with Katey Thompson and Britton Taylor adding 2.92 and 2.20 kills respectively. Ali Santi handles the setting duties for the Guachos dishing out 8.90 assist per set.
The Opening of BWC Play...: The Mustangs opened Big West Conference play this past week with losses to Long Beach State in four sets and UC Irvine in three. Junior Holly Franks led the team in those match averaging 2.86 kills per set. True freshman Hannah Schleis added 2.71 kills with senior Molly Pon chipping in with 2.43. Junior Marianne Gera hit .467 in the two matches... Freshman Nicole Kessler led the team with 3.29 digs per set.
Overall: Overall this season Holly Franks continues to lead the team with 3.00 kills per set... Molly Pon is second with 2.23 kills... Hannah Schleis is third with 1.96 followed by Maddie Kuber with 1.79... Kate Walters is the team leader in assists with 5.58 with Maddie Kuber with 5.36... Nicole Kessler checks in with 3.50 digs with Steffi Sooter at 2.40 and Kuber with 2.18...
Franks Earns All-Tournament in Utah Classic: Junior Holly Franks earned all-tournament honors when she averaged 3.45 kills per set... Franks had 17 kills against Utah Valley and 13 against Nevada... In the loss to Utah she tallied eight... For the tournament she hit .202 recording 38 kills on 84 swings....
Others–– at the Tournament: True Freshman Hannah Schleis tallied 27 kills in the three matches (2.45) on 69 swings... Junior middle blocker hit a remarkable .515 with 18 kills on 33 swings... Another true freshman stepped up at the tournament.... Maddie Kuber ... She averaged 2.27 kills, 2.00 digs, 7.36 assists and .64 blocks per set.... The setter/outside hitting recorded her 25 kills on 63 swings.... Junior transfer Steffi Sooter checked in with 4.00 digs per set while Nicole Kessler added 2.18 digs...
True Freshmen Stepping up...: Nicole Kessler, libero, tallied 35 digs in the match with Idaho and is averaging a team-high 3.54 digs per set...... Nicole's aunt, Lynn Kessler, was a standout player for the Mustangs in the 80's under head coach Mike Willton...
Schleis, Getting Comfortable ....: Outside hitter, true freshman, Hannah Schleis found her stride at the Utah Classic when she averaged 2.45 kills per set.... Against Utah Valley she tallied nine kills, 14 against Nevada and four against Utah.... For the season she is averaging 1.67 kills and .61 digs...
Playing the Best.... : The Mustangs have faced the No. 2 team (Texas) and the No. 19 team (San Diego) in the first week of the season.... Two weeks later the Mustangs faced No. 5 USC and No. 17 San Diego (again)... During the BWC season Cal Poly will face No. 7 Hawai'i twice and Pacific twice, who is receiving votes....
Missing in Action.... : Jennifer Keddy, a two-time AVCA All-America selection, was named the 2011 Big West Conference Player of the Year when she led the conference with 4.06 kills per set is sidelined for the season with a shoulder injury. The 6-4 middle blocker was also third in hitting percentage with a .339 clip and blocks with a 1.22 average. Keddy's 4.85 points per set average ranks first in the Big West and 22nd in the nation. Her all-around skills include 1.76 digs per set with her career-high 19 coming against UC Irvine. She was also selected for the national A2 team.
• In 2012, Big West volleyball expands to 10 teams with the addition of the University of Hawai'i. The Rainbow Wahine competed in the Big West from 1985-95 and posted a 165-31 Big West record and an overall mark of 302-68.
... The Mustangs have not made a postseason since the 2007 season... Overall the team has made 14 appearances and post a 13-14 overall record.
Triple -Double.... : True freshman Maddie Kuber led the team to a five set win over Idaho this past week when she tallied a triple-doulbe with 15 kills, 30 assists and 10 digs.... Her kills came on 38 swings (.184) while adding one solo block and three assisted blocks...
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Hannah Schleis tallied 15 kills in the Mustangs' four-set loss to Long Beach State in the team's Big West Conference opener on Friday at the Pyramid in Long Beach. Set scores went 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-14. Schleis led the Mustangs with 15 kills on 26 swings committing six hitting errors for a .346 hitting percentage. The true freshman also added a solo and an assisted block. Senior Molly Pon and junior Holly Franks each added nine kills in the four set match. Freshman Maddie Kuber produced eight kills and a team-high 20 assists. Freshman Nicole Kessler and Kuber led the team with nine digs each with Megan McConnell and Marianne Gera each adding three assisted blocks. Long Beach State outhit the Mustangs .345 to .160 and held a 65-48 advantage in digs. The Mustangs had five service aces to LBSU's four with the 49ers holding a 9-7 advantage in blocks. Alma Serna and Chisom Okpala tallied 16 and 11 kills respectively to lead Long Beach State while Janisa Johnson had 15 digs to lead all players. LBSU dominated the first set, winning 25-17 and hitting a blistering .571 while the Mustangs hit .226. In the second set the Mustang s stayed with LBSU midway through the set (14-14) when Cal Poly went on a 9-1 run to open a 23-15 lead and closed the set out and even the match, 25-23. Cal Poly won the set despite getting outhit .231 to .273 In the third set the teams traded points until LBSU gained a two point advantage, 21-19, and went on to win the set 25-21. In the third set LBSU held a .229 to .143 hitting advantage over the Mustangs. LBSU gained a three point advantage at 6-3 in the fourth set and held it until the Mustangs fought back to cut the lead to 10-9 on a kill by Schleis. LBSU turned it up and gained a 17-10 lead and cruised to a 25-14 win in the fourth set and closed out the match, 3-1.
IRVINE, Calif. – Holly Franks recorded 11 kills for Cal Poly in a three set loss to UC Irvine in a Big West Conference volleyball match on Saturday at the Bren Events Center. Set scores went 25-12, 25-17 and 25-22. Franks kills came on 25 swings with only five hitting errors (.240) with senior Molly Pon adding eight kills on 24 swings. Megan McConnell would add six kills while Marianne Gera tallied five. Hannah Schleis added four kills. Sydney Wright led the Anteaters with 14 kills with Marisa Bubica and Shannon Fleming adding 11 and 10 kills respectively. UCI outhit the Mustangs, .350 to .168, held an edge in digs, 42-35, and held an 11-3 advantage in blocks. UC Irvine grabbed the lead early in the first set, never relinquishing the lead, and closing out the set 25-12. UCI hit .464 in the set with 14 kills while the Mustangs hit .161 with 10 kills. The second set went the way of the first set with UCI gaining a 10 point advantage at 18-8. Cal Poly cut the lead to seven (19-12) on a kill by Schleis and to six (21-15) on a kill by Pon, but UCI would close out the set 25-17. UCI continued with the hot hand hitting .421 in the set while Cal Poly hit .150. The third set opened with the teams trading points until UCI edged out to a 9-6 lead. The Mustangs kept it within three at 15-12 on a kill by Franks. The Mustangs kept it close, but UC Irvine would hold on for a 25-22. In the third set the Mustangs would out hit UCI, .194 to .189.
