SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Senior slotback Deonte Williams rushed for 188 yards on 20 carries and scored three touchdowns as Cal Poly, playing its first Big Sky Conference football game, defeated UC Davis 28-20 before a sellout crowd of 11,075 in the Battle for the Golden Horseshoe on Saturday night in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Williams scored on runs of 5, 14 and 7 yards as Coach Tim Walsh's Mustangs erased an early 10-0 deficit, built a 28-10 advantage midway through the third quarter and held on for its third straight victory.
Cal Poly, which cracked the 300-yard mark in rushing for the third consecutive game, improved to 3-0 on the year and 1-0 in Big Sky games. UC Davis, playing its final season under 20-year head coach Bob Biggs, fell to 1-3 and 0-1.
UC Davis had won three straight Battle for the Golden Horseshoes games and appeared headed for No. 4, scoring the first 10 points of the game on a 39-yard field goal by Brady Stuart and a 67-yard touchdown pass from Randy Wright to Corey Galindo in the opening 9 minutes and 18 seconds.
Cal Poly scored the next 28 points of the game to turn it around.
After an exchange of punts, Mustang junior fullback Akaninyene Umoh broke off a 51-yard scoring run to trim UC Davis' lead to 10-7 with 1:01 left in the first quarter.
Williams' five-yard run midway through the second quarter gave Cal Poly a 14-10 advantage which the Mustangs carried into the locker room at halftime.
Williams scored his other two touchdowns in the third quarter, a 14-yarder with 13:41 to play to cap a quick 85-yard, four-play drive and a seven-yarder with 5:13 remaining in the period.
Trailing 28-10, UC Davis mounted a fourth-quarter rally.
The Aggies drove 97 yards in 14 plays, scoring on a two-yard run by Courtney Williams with 10:10 to play, and Brady Stuart added a 41-yard field goal with 5:45 to play.
Cal Poly picked up one first down before punting the ball back to UC Davis with 2:34 to play. Wright drove the Aggies 12 yards to their 35-yard line before he threw four incomplete passes. Cal Poly closed out the game with three kneel downs.
Williams, who set a Cal Poly career high with 187 yards in last week's 24-22 win at Wyoming, added one yard to his career high Saturday. He has three 100-yard performances in three games this season, rushed for 100 yards against UC Davis a year ago in Davis and also rushed for over 100 yards four times in his freshman season at Northern Arizona for eight career 100-yard games.
Umoh finished with 87 yards on 12 carries with one score as Cal Poly amassed a 336-84 advantage in yards rushing and a 434-362 edge in total offense. The Mustangs rushed for 323 yards against San Diego in their season opener Sept. 1 and added 325 yards in the win over Wyoming on Sept. 15.
UC Davis outpassed Cal Poly 278-98 as Wright completed 25 of 45 passes for 278 yards and one score. His favorite targets were Taylor Sloat, Cameron Sentence and Marquis Nicolis, each with four catches. Galindo finished with three receptions for 100 yards.
