
Freshman Hannah Scheis Records 15 kills in Four Set Loss to LBSU

LONG BEACH, Calif. – Freshman Hannah Schleis tallied 15 kills in the Mustangs' four-set loss to Long Beach State in the team's Big West Conference opener on Friday at the Pyramid in Long Beach. Set scores went 25-17, 23-25, 25-21 and 25-14.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 1-11 overall and 0-1 in Big West play while LBSU improves to 6-6 and 1-0. Cal Poly returns to action on Saturday when the team travels to UC Irvine to continue conference with a match at 7 pm.
Schleis led the Mustangs with 15 kills on 26 swings committing six hitting errors for a .346 hitting percentage. The true freshman also added a solo and an assisted block. Senior Molly Pon and junior Holly Franks each added nine kills in the four set match. Freshman Maddie Kuber produced eight kills and a team-high 20 assists.
Freshman Nicole Kessler and Kuber led the team with nine digs each with Megan McConnell and Marianne Gera each adding three assisted blocks.
Long Beach State outhit the Mustangs .345 to .160 and held a 65-48 advantage in digs. The Mustangs had five service aces to LBSU's four with the 49ers holding a 9-7 advantage in blocks.
Alma Serna and Chisom Okpala tallied 16 and 11 kills respectively to lead Long Beach State while Janisa Johnson had 15 digs to lead all players.
LBSU dominated the first set, winning 25-17 and hitting a blistering .571 while the Mustangs hit .226.
In the second set the Mustang s stayed with LBSU midway through the set (14-14) when Cal Poly went on a 9-1 run to open a 23-15 lead and closed the set out and even the match, 25-23. Cal Poly won the set despite getting outhit .231 to .273
In the third set the teams traded points until LBSU gained a two point advantage, 21-19, and went on to win the set 25-21. In the third set LBSU held a .229 to .143 hitting advantage over the Mustangs.
LBSU gained a three point advantage at 6-3 in the fourth set and held it until the Mustangs fought back to cut the lead to 10-9 on a kill by Schleis. LBSU turned it up and gained a 17-10 lead and cruised to a 25-14 win in the fourth set and closed out the match, 3-1.
