
UC Irvine Defeats Cal Poly in Three Sets

IRVINE, Calif. – Holly Franks recorded 11 kills for Cal Poly in a three set loss to UC Irvine in a Big West Conference volleyball match on Saturday at the Bren Events Center. Set scores went 25-12, 25-17 and 25-22.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 1-12 overall and 0-2 in Big West play while UC Irvine improves to 7-8 and 2-0.
Franks kills came on 25 swings with only five hitting errors (.240) with senior Molly Pon adding eight kills on 24 swings. Megan McConnell would add six kills while Marianne Gera tallied five. Hannah Schleis added four kills.
Sydney Wright led the Anteaters with 14 kills with Marisa Bubica and Shannon Fleming adding 11 and 10 kills respectively.
UCI outhit the Mustangs, .350 to .168, held an edge in digs, 42-35, and held an 11-3 advantage in blocks.
UC Irvine grabbed the lead early in the first set, never relinquishing the lead, and closing out the set 25-12. UCI hit .464 in the set with 14 kills while the Mustangs hit .161 with 10 kills.
The second set went the way of the first set with UCI gaining a 10 point advantage at 18-8. Cal Poly cut the lead to seven (19-12) on a kill by Schleis and to six (21-15) on a kill by Pon, but UCI would close out the set 25-17. UCI continued with the hot hand hitting .421 in the set while Cal Poly hit .150.
The third set opened with the teams trading points until UCI edged out to a 9-6 lead. The Mustangs kept it within three at 15-12 on a kill by Franks. The Mustangs kept it close, but UC Irvine would hold on for a 25-22. In the third set the Mustangs would out hit UCI, .194 to .189.
