
Sam Crosson Earns First Win as Mustang Head Coach

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly head coach Sam Crosson earned his first win at Cal Poly with a five set win over Idaho on Thursday in the team's 2012 home opener while true freshman Maddie Kuber recorded a triple-double to lead the team. Set scores went 25-27, 25-23, 25-18, 16-25 and 15-9. The Mustangs improve to 1-3 on the season while Idaho falls to 2-2.
Cal Poly returns to action on Sunday when the team travels to Santa Barbara for a neutral match against Northeastern at 12-noon at the Thunderdome.
Kuber tallied 15 kills, 30 assists and 10 digs to round out her first triple-double at Cal Poly. Her kills came on 38 swings in the five set match. Junior Holly Franks led the team with 17 kills hitting .361. Senior Molly Pon was the third Mustangs with 10 or more kills with 12.
Another true freshman, Nicole Kessler, led the team in digs with 35 while Pon recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 digs.
Junior Kate Walters recorded a team-high 31 assists while adding five digs.
Idaho had three players record 10 or more kills led by Allison Walker with 18 while Alyssa Schultz and Alex Sele recorded 15 and 10 respectively.
Cal Poly as a team hit .208 while Idaho hit .209. Cal Poly held the edge in digs, 74-71 while Idaho recorded five aces compared to the Mustangs one.
The first set was a battle with Idaho hitting .244 and the Mustangs, .222. Walker recorded six kills in the first set to lead the Vandals while Franks had seven for the Mustangs.
In the second set the Mustangs got things going, hitting .263 with four players recording three or more kills. Idaho was limited to .147 hitting percentage.
The third was all about the Mustangs as Kuber had five kills on 10 swing with just one hitting error with the team hitting .306. Idaho hit .195 for the set.
In the fourth the Vandals evened the match with a blistering .440 hitting percentage with Walker recording five kills. Cal Poly was limited to just seven kills on 30 swings with 10 errors (-.100).
Cal Poly dominated the fifth and final set jumping out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back in the 15-9 win. Kills were distributed with four Mustangs with two kills each.
