
No. 22 Texas Tech Defeats No. 63 Mustangs in First Round of NCAA's, 4-1

BERKELEY, Calif. – The 63rd-ranked Cal Poly men's tennis team did everything they could to upset 22nd-ranked Texas Tech in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship, but it would be too much with Texas Tech prevailing, 4-1, Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley. The Mustangs conclude the season 15-8 while Texas Tech improves to 16-8 and will face the winner of the Cal – UTSA match on Sunday.
Play opened with doubles and high hopes for the Mustangs as the No. 3 doubles team, Jurgen De Jager and Marco Comuzzo defeated Jeff Bryan and Rpahael Pfister, 8-6.
Jordan Bridge and Brian McPhee secured the point for the Mustangs with an 8-4 win over Rafael Garcia and Vitor Manzini on the second court.
The 68th-ranked duo of Andre Dome and Matt Fawcett versus 18th-ranked Raony Carvalho and Gonzalo Escobar went unfinished with the doubles point decided.
Singles play opened with the Mustangs holding a 1-0 advantage, but Texas Tech's Pfister evened the match when he defeated Sebastian Bell on the sixth court in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3.
Garcia gave Texas Tech a 2-1 lead when he defeated Fawcett, 6-4, 6-4, on the third court while 79th-ranked Carvalho defeated McPhee, 6-2, 6-3, on the second court.
The deciding point came on the fourth court with Cal Poly's Bridge giving Manzini all he could handle. Manzini won the first set, 6-4, with Bridge battling back winning the second set, 6-3. Manzini prevailed in the third with a 6-4 win giving Texas Tech the win over the Mustangs.
The two remaining matches went unfinished with the match decided. Dome and Escobar each had won a set with the third set tied 3-3 when the match was called.
On the fifth court, De Jager was leading in the third set over Francisco Zambon when the match was called.
