Gatewood Shines as Mustang Women's Tennis Bested by Long Beach State

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Sophomore Gabby Gatewood (above) produced victories in singles and doubles action, but the Cal Poly women's tennis program opened a three-match home stand on Mustang Courts Friday afternoon with a 6-1 loss against No. 51 and Big West Conference-leading Long Beach State.
Cal Poly (7-9, 2-3) opened Friday's match by conceding the doubles point to Long Beach State (12-5, 6-0). Cal Poly senior Jocelyn Davis and junior Alexa Lee fell at No. 1 against Rachel Manasse and Laura Bernard, 8-6, before the Mustang sophomore pairing of Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb yielded an 8-1 decision at No. 2 against Anais Dallara and Klaudia Malenovska. Gatewood, however, combined with freshman Ireen Kuipers to edge Sarah Cantlay and Julie Luzar at No. 3, 8-6.
In singles action, Lee fell at No. 1 against Dallara, 6-4, 6-4, before Davis dropped a 6-3, 7-5 decision at No. 2 against Manasse. Webb was overturned at No. 3 by Bernard, 6-2, 6-3, before Gatewood salvaged Cal Poly's lone point of the afternoon at No. 4 by rallying to defeat Cantlay, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0. Kuipers lost a 6-1, 7-6 match at No. 5 against Malenovska before Luzar overcame a first-set deficit to best McPike at No. 6, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
"We battled hard, but just didn't take the big points when we needed them," first-year Cal Poly head coach Damon Coupe said. "Overall, we feel good about how we played."
Cal Poly completes its three-match home stand when hosting UC Santa Barbara on Tuesday, April 10 at 1 p.m. and UC Riverside on Saturday, April 14 at 11 a.m.
