
Holly Franks Tallies 12 kills in Sweep of UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Holly Franks recorded a match-high 12 kills in leading the Cal Poly volleyball team to a three set sweep over visiting UC Irvine Friday night at Mott Gym. The win snapped a seven match winless streak for the Mustangs as the team improves to 4-25 overall and 3-14 in Big West matches. UCI falls to 11-21 overall and 5-12 in conference contests.
Cal Poly will return to action on Saturday at 7 pm when the team will host Long Beach State in the team's final regular season match. Prior to first serve the Mustangs will honor the team's lone senior, Molly Pon.
Franks' kills came on 29 swings with just three attack errors hitting .310 in the match. The junior's all-around game included eight digs and three assisted blocks. Fellow junior Megan McConnell added seven kills with 15 digs and three assisted blocks. Marianne Gera had eight kills on 14 swings while hitting .500 in the match.
Freshman Nicole Kessler had 15 digs while Maddie Kuber recorded 20 assists with Shannon Garrett earning credit for 13 assists.
Shannon Fleming and Ella Rosenfeld led the Anteaters with nine kills each with Kristin Winkler leading the team with 14 digs.
Cal Poly as a team hit .271 while limiting UCI to a .121 percentage. The Mustangs held a slight edge in digs, 59-55, and in aces, 4-2, but dominated in kills (42-35) and blocks (7-4).
The first set was all about the Mustangs with the team limiting UCI to a .000 hitting percentage. The Mustangs .200 with McConnell, Chelsea Hardin and Gera all recording three kills each in the 25-15 win.
The second set was a bit tighter with three tie scores and two lead changes as Cal Poly hit .191 to UCI's .152. Pon stepped up big in the second set with five kills 25-20 win.
The third set was wire-to-wire Mustangs as the team hit .484 to UCI's .242. Franks dominated the set with seven kills as the team totaled three blocks in the 25-18 win.
