
Mustangs Conclude Season with Loss to LBSU, 3-0

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Junior Holly Franks recorded a match-high 14 kills, but it would not be enough as the Long Beach State 49ers defeated the Cal Poly volleyball team in three sets to conclude the season. LBSU won by set scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 25-21.
With the loss the Mustangs fall to 4-26 overall and 3-15 in Big West matches while LBSU improves to 18-11 overall and 13-5 in conference matches.
Prior to the start of the match, Cal Poly honored the team's lone senior, Molly Pon. The senior concludes her career at Cal Poly with 574 kills, 243 digs and 90 total blocks.
Franks' kills came on 35 swings and added four digs and two assisted blocks. Junior Megan McConnell tallied six kills with 16 digs and one block assist.
Chelsea Hardin and Pon each recorded five kills with junior Steffi Sooter recording 12 digs.
LBSU was led by Chisom Okpala with 13 kills and six total blocks while Janisa Johnson had 18 digs to lead the team.
LBUS hit .299 for the match with 58 digs and 10 team blocks while the Mustangs hit .137 with 34 digs and six team blocks.
The first set had five ties and two lead changes before LBSU pulled away for a 25-18 win. Okpala had four kills in the set while McConnell led the Mustangs with four as Cal Poly was outhit .317 to .133.
In the second set the Mustangs put pressure on LBSU, but the 49ers pulled way hitting .308 with 16 kills while the Mustangs hit .135 with 11 kills.
In the third set, Cal Poly fell behind early, but closed the lead to three, 22-19, late in the set before falling 25-21. Franks had eight kills in the set and hit .375 while Okpala had seven and hit .600.
