
Brown-Trafton Finishes 5th at World Championships

DAEGU, KOREA – Former Cal Poly standout and Olympic Champion, Stephanie Brown-Trafton, finished fifth at the IAAF World Championships in the discus.
Brown-Trafton posted a mark of 209 feet, 5.50 inches in the finals, an improvement over her qualifying throw of 203 feet, 0.50 inches.
Yangeng Le of China won the discus with a mark of 218 feet, 3 inches.
Brown-Trafton earned her trip to the championships when she won her third USATF Championship in the discus with a throw of 207 feet, 10 inches.
She became Cal Poly's first Olympic gold medalist when she won the discus at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Brown Trafton won the Olympic title with a best mark of 212 feet, 5 inches.
Brown Trafton, who graduated from Cal Poly in 2004 with a degree in industrial engineering, also competed in the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
Brown Trafton was a seven-time Big West champion, four in the shot put and three in the discus, and three times earned NCAA All-America honors in outdoor track and field, placing seventh in the shot put in 2001, fourth in the discus in 2002 and fourth in the shot put in 2003. She also earned three All-America certificates in indoor track and still holds Cal Poly records of 57-0 in the shot put and 189-7 in the discus.
Another former Cal Poly standout, Ben Bruce, will be in action tomorrow when he makes his first appearance at the World Championships in the 3000 meter steeplechase.
