
No. 47 Mustangs Wrap Regular Season with 4-3 Victory

FRESNO, Calif. – The 47th-ranked Cal Poly women's tennis program finalized its 2011 regular season spring campaign by winning the doubles point for the 16th time in 21 matches as the Mustangs edged No. 75 Fresno State on Sunday at the Spalding G. Warren Tennis Center, 4-3.
Cal Poly (16-5), which earned the No. 2 seed for the April 28-May 1 Big West Conference Tournament with a 6-1 home victory versus No. 60 UC Irvine on Saturday, opened Sunday's victory with senior Amy Markhoff and sophomore Alexa Lee producing an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles versus Marianne Jodoin and Laura Pola. Mustang senior Ashley Pane and junior Jocelyn Davis combined at No. 2 to double up Olga Kirpicheva and Melissa McQueen, 8-4, before the Cal Poly freshman partnership of Florence Lehane and Gabrielle Gatewood finalized the doubles sweep at No. 3 with a 9-7 triumph against Abby Hayley and Bianca Modoc.
Lee opened Cal Poly's singles efforts at No. 1 by dropping a 6-2, 6-1 decision versus the 56th-ranked Jodoin before Pane fell at No. 2 against Pola, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. However, Lehane produced a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 3 against McQueen before Mustang freshman Jennifer Cornea swept Modoc at No. 4, 7-5, 6-3. Kirpicheva topped Mustang junior Jocelyn Davis, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5, but Cal Poly freshman Kathryn Webb rallied to win the match with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 triumph versus Hayley at No. 6.
The Mustangs, who improved to 7-5 versus ranked opposition this spring with Sunday's victory, open the Big West Tournament against a yet-to-be-determined opponent on Friday, April 29 at the Indian Wells (Calif.) Tennis Center.
