SAN LUIS OBISPO – The No. 64 Cal Poly women's tennis team failed to drop a set on Saturday against UC Santa Cruz as the Mustangs opened their 2011 spring campaign with a 7-0 whitewash of the Banana Slugs on Mustang Courts.
Cal Poly (1-0), which claimed the doubles point during 18 of 23 dual matches last season, opened Saturday's contest by sweeping UC Santa Cruz (0-1). Junior Jocelyn Davis and freshman Florence Lehane prevailed at No. 1 against Ariana Mokhtari and Taylor Mannix, 8-2. The freshman pairing of Jen Cornea and Gabrielle Gatewood produced the same winning margin at No. 2 versus Alex Scotten and Laura Wade before freshmen Ane McPike and Kathryn Webb teamed to produce an 8-1 victory at No. 3 versus Nicole Hannouche and Rachel Shinto.
Davis (above), competing at the No. 1 singles position for the first time during her collegiate tenure, downed Mokhtari, 6-1, 6-1, before Lehane defeated Mannix at No. 2, 6-3, 6-2. Cornea defeated Scotten at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3, while Webb registered a 6-3, 6-0 win versus Wade at No. 4. Gatewood triumphed at No. 5 versus Shinto, 6-2, 6-2, before McPike finalized Cal Poly's sweep with a 6-3, 6-1 victory versus Hannouche at the No. 6 position.
"With a couple of upperclassmen out due to injuries and personal commitments, we started five freshmen today and were really pleased with their poise and enthusiasm," said 11th-year head coach Hugh Bream, whose Mustangs next compete at the California Winter Invitational in Berkeley Jan. 21-23. "Jocelyn Davis did a great job of providing energy and leadership at the No. 1 spot in singles and doubles. We're excited to head to Berkeley next week to face some top-caliber competition – the type of competition that will allow a young team to learn and develop."
