URBANA-CHAMPAIGN, Ill – Senior Desiray Johnston tied her career-high with 16 points, but it would not be enough as the University of Illinois defeated the Cal Poly women's basketball team 104-63 in a non-conference game Monday. With the loss Cal Poly falls to 2-2 while Illinois improves to 2-2.
Johnston's points came when she hit five of eight from the field including two of three long range. She was a perfect four of four from the line. Fellow senior Rachel Clancy added 15 points and junior Abby Bloetscher chipped in with 11.
Kayla Briffin and Bloetscher each grabbed a team-high six rebounds as Illinois outrebounded the Mustangs 45-32.
Illinois was led by Karisma Penn's 30 points and 10 rebounds. Macie Blinn and Lyhdia McCully each scored 17 points in the win.
Cal Poly as a team shot 35 percent from the floor and made seven of 19 three-pointers while Illinois shot 62 percent from the floor and hit 10 of 17 from long range.
At the midpoint of the first half, Illinois held a 25-15 advantage with Penn contributing 13 of the points. Illinois used a 6-0 run to widen the gap, hitting nearly 60 percent of its shots (59 percent) while Cal Poly shot 38 percent.
The Ilini expanded the lead to 16 (37-21) on a jumper by Centrese McGee with 5:22 left in the half.
With 1:39 left in the period, Cal Poly cut the lead to 11 (39-28) when Abby Bloetscher made a layup forcing an Illinois time out. Illinois responded with a 9-2 run to end the period and a 48-30 advantage at the break.
Illinois stretched the lead to 20 (62-42) at the 14:00 minute mark of the second period. They made it a 29 point advantage (78-49) with 10 minutes left in the game and 40 (97-57) with four minutes remaining.
The Mustangs return to action on Dec. 3 at the ASU Classic when they play host Arizona State.
