
No. 22/20 Cal Poly Defeats Saint Francis (Pa.) 41-33

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Fullbacks Jordan Yocum and Jake Romanelli combined for five touchdown runs and wide receiver Dominique Johnson caught a touchdown pass to keep his consecutive games streak alive as No. 22/20 Cal Poly defeated Saint Francis (Pa.) 41-33 in a non-conference football game Saturday night before 7,132 in Alex G. Spanos Stadium.
Yocum rushed for 32 yards and a career-high three touchdowns while Romanelli added 35 yards and two scores as the Mustangs clinched their seventh winning season in the last eight years and improved to 6-3 on the year.
Saint Francis, despite advantages in first downs (24-21) and time of possession (33:11 to 26:49), fell to 1-7.
Yocum scored Cal Poly's first two touchdowns on runs of two and six yards.
Saint Francis answered with a one-yard scoring pass from John Kelly to Kevin Parker and a three-yard run by Jude Yearwood as the Red Flash trailed 13-12 at halftime.
Cal Poly scored the first two touchdowns of the third quarter on runs of four and five yards by Romanelli and was able to maintain an advantage of eight to 15 points the rest of the way.
Yocum's seven-yard scoring run gave the Mustangs a 34-19 cushion with 14:58 to play and Johnson caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Tony Smith with 2:23 to play to seal the verdict.
For Johnson, he has played in 19 Cal Poly games since transferring from UCLA in the summer of 2009 and has caught at least one pass in each contest, including 10 for touchdowns.
Johnson matched his season high with eight receptions for 115 yards.
Saint Francis stayed in the game with three touchdowns in the final 19 minutes – a one-yard run by Dan Conley, a 10-yard pass from Kelly to Omar Winston and a 23-yarder from Kelly to Dane Domonkos.
Smith, who completed 12 of 16 passes last week in a 22-21 win over North Dakota, continued his hot streak by connecting on 19 of 24 passes for a season-high 231 yards against Saint Francis.
Junior slotback Mark Rodgers was Cal Poly's top rusher with 79 yards on 10 carries and also caught four passes for 50 yards. Smith added 38 yards on nine rushes. Redshirt freshman Gabriel Umoh, starting in place of the injured David Mahr, rushed for eight yards on two carries and caught five passes for 51 yards.
For Saint Francis, John Kelly completed 26 of 41 passes for 242 yards and three scores. Winston caught six passes while Anthony Howze grabbed five. Kelly was the top ground gainer for the Red Flash with 71 yards on 13 carries and Yearwood added 49 yards on 15 trips.
Cornerback Bijon Samoodi and linebacker Kenny Jackson each made eight tackles for Cal Poly.
Scott Lewis made 13 stops and Matthew Parker added 11 for Saint Francis.
There were no turnovers and no sacks in the contest.
Cal Poly compiled a 421-373 advantage in total offense but was slowed by 10 penalties for 108 yards.
Cal Poly's Homecoming Game featured the return of 13 survivors of the 1960 plane crash in Toledo, Ohio, which claimed the lives of 16 Mustang football players, the team manager and a Cal Poly booster.
Cal Poly, 4-0 at home this season, goes back on the road next week, visiting South Dakota for a Great West Conference game at 2:05 p.m. PDT in Vermillion, S.D. The Coyotes (4-5, 1-2 Great West) defeated Northern Colorado 34-6 in a non-conference game Saturday.
