Courtney Roberts, an associate head coach for the Washington women's golf team for three years and a former head women's golf coach at Oklahoma State, where she was a part of teams that won two Big 12 titles and was named the Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2016, was named head coach of the Cal Poly women's golf program on July 19, 2022.
In her second season in 2023-24, Roberts coached the Mustangs to place in the top five rankings in five regular season matches and a second place ranking in the Big West Championship in her second season as head coach. The Mustangs' second place finish in the Big West Championship is only one of five tournaments they ranked in the top five. Roberts also led five Mustangs- Jensen Jalufka, Kamille Dimayuga, Kaylee Sadoka, Nicole Neale and Sarah Yoo- to take home All-Big West Honors this season.
In her first season at the helm of the Mustangs in 2022-23, Roberts guided the program to its third straight Big West Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. She also saw three players - Nicole Neale, Jensen Jalufka, and Kamille Dimayuga all earn All-Big West honors. Neale also earned a top-20 finish at the NCAA Tournament Pullman Regional. Off the course, two of her players - Elizabeth Scholtes and Dimayuga landed on the WCGA All-American Scholar Team.
As the associate head coach at Washington for three years, Roberts helped the Huskies reach the NCAA Tournament twice and coached a pair of players who earned Pac-12 All-Conference honors.
Prior to heading to Seattle, Roberts was the head women's golf coach at Oklahoma State for six seasons and an assistant coach there for two years prior to that. While there, she helped the Cowgirls win Big 12 titles in 2013 and 2016 while being named Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2016. She also coached a Big 12 Player of the Year and Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
During her tenure, she led Oklahoma State to 13 tournament titles while seeing two players earn individual Big 12 titles. Including her time as an assistant, the Cowgirls won 19 tournament titles.
When she led the Cowgirls to the NCAA Tournament in 2016, OSU led the country with 563 birdies and had three players post stroke averages that ranked among the top eight in school history.
She mentored Kenzie Neisen, who won back-to-back individual conference titles, Chih-Min Chen, who won the league's Freshman of the Year award, and Julie Yang who was named the 2014 Big 12 Player of the Year. In all, Roberts led 19 Cowgirls to All-Big 12 honors while also seeing 14 players earn Academic All-American honors.
"We believe her background of success will blend nicely with our program's recent string of championships, and lead Cal Poly women's golf to new heights," Oberhelman said. "She is a great fit not only for our department, but also for our entire community."
Roberts says one of the most attractive parts of the Cal Poly job was the recent success the program has had and the support it has from the school and community.
"Coming off consecutive Big West Championships, the program is in a great position to take off thanks to the hard work of the coaches before me and players on the team," Roberts said. "I look forward to building on this strong foundation and getting to work with the exceptional young women on this team."
"I love how golf is important to the community," Roberts added. "This is evident by the transformational gifts made by generous members of the community, the investment in facilities and their passion for making a difference in the lives of the student-athletes."
Roberts started at Oklahoma State in 2011 after working as the senior tournament director for the American Junior Golf Association, a position she held since 2007. While working at the AJGA, she helped plan and run 39 national junior golf championships and served as tournament director for 21 of those events.
"I am grateful for my time at both the University of Washington and Oklahoma State Athletic Departments," Roberts said. "I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with and learn from amazing coaches, student-athletes and people. I look forward to sharing these experiences with the Mustang family and impacting our student-athletes."
She also worked as a regional assistant for the AJGA where she was responsible for marketing and sponsor development in the South Central region, which spans nine states and includes Mexico.
A graduate of the University of Tulsa, Roberts spent the 2006 fall season as a graduate assistant at her alma mater.
She joined the Golden Hurricane program after a successful junior career that included being named a 2000 HP Scholastic All-American, 2000 Rolex Junior Honorable Mention All-American, Kansas Golfer of the Year and Midwest Section PGA Girl Junior Golfer of the Year.
As a player at Tulsa, Roberts was a three-year letterwinner and registered three career top-20 finishes. She also earned All-WAC Academic honors twice and was named an Academic All-American by the National Golf Coaches Association in 2003 and 2004.
She graduated Cum Laude from Tulsa with degrees in International Business and Spanish and a minor in Economics.
"From the moment I stepped foot in San Luis Obispo, I was drawn to the family atmosphere, incredible people and passionate support in the community for golf at Cal Poly," Roberts said. "Pair this with the opportunity to attain a world class degree and train on these elite facilities, the possibilities are endless for our student-athletes."
