After helping Cal Poly capture two Big West titles as a player, Whalen is serving the Mustang beach volleyball program as an assistant coach in for the 2025 season, her second stint helping as an assistant coach for the Mustangs after having previously coached in 2023.
In her three years playing for the Mustangs, Whalen had a career record of 31-15 and was a First Team All-Conference honoree in 2021. During her first season with Cal Poly in 2020 that was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Whalen paired with Tia Miric and went 8-1 while playing at the top two spots in the lineup.
During her second season in 2021, she and Miric were 16-8 and helped Cal Poly win the program collect its first ever win at the NCAA Championships. In 2022, Whalen returned to the team in April after recovering from offseason shoulder surgery to play the final 13 matches of the season. In the Big West Tournament that year, she paired with Piper Naess to go 4-0 during the tournament and help the Mustangs capture the title.
Prior to arriving at Cal Poly, Whalen played indoor volleyball at the University of Wisconsin for two seasons. The Wausau, WI native was a 2016 Under Armour Third Team All-American in high school for indoor volleyball and was a two time MaxPreps All-American while helping lead Newman Catholic High School to four straight state championships. In addition, she was a two time First Team All-State selection and a four time All-Conference selection.
She earned her both her undergraduate degree and masters degree from Cal Poly.
