Former Liga MX coach Roberto Rodriguez is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Cal Poly men’s soccer team and as the program’s goalkeeper trainer.
Rodriguez arrived at Cal Poly in March 2021 after most recently serving as the head goalkeeper coach at Liga MX side Club Tijuana’s second team and for the club’s academy setup. Prior, Rodriguez was Tijuana’s assistant goalkeeping coach for the first team from 2014-15.
“(Roberto) brings a wealth of experience with him from the youth and professional levels,” Cal Poly head coach Steve Sampson said. “Roberto’s training methods and his approach to goalkeeping will be a tremendous asset to our team and, specifically, our goalkeepers. He takes his job very seriously and we look forward to watching his impact on our program during his tenure at Cal Poly.”
The U-16 and U-18 director of goalkeeping for La Jolla-based Nomads Soccer Club (2014-16) – of which Cal Poly goalkeeper Carlos Arce-Hurtado, forward Angel De Leon and defender Luis Rodriguez are alums – Rodriguez helped the club to a fourth-place finish at the 2016 United States Soccer Development Academy national championship. Rodriguez was also an assistant coach and goalkeeper trainer for the Southwestern College (Chula Vista, Calif.) women’s program (2015-17).
As a player, Rodriguez appeared for Liga MX’s Club Necaxa (2012) and for Los Gallos de Aguascalientes at U-23 level (2011).
