This Week in Mustang Athletics
- The defending Big West Champions, Cal Poly volleyball plays its first matches of the season inside the Mott Athletics Center when they host the SLO Classic on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. The Mustangs’ home opener against Santa Clara is set for 7 p.m. Thursday.
- The Cal Poly football team is back at Spanos Stadium at 5 p.m. Saturday to host San Diego as part of Homecoming.
- Off to its best start in 12 years, the Mustang men’s soccer team continues a three-match homestand Wednesday when they welcome Cal State Bakersfield to Spanos Stadium.
- The Cal Poly women’s soccer team travels to Seattle on Saturday to wrap up nonconference play.
- Following up on a fantastic 2025-26 season with a share of the Big West regular season title and subsequent postseason victory over UC San Diego, the Cal Poly men’s tennis team is back in action this Saturday to open their fall season at the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla. WEEKLY SNEAK PEEK
- The Mustang volleyball program split another set of non-conference matches last week, falling to host Indiana before sweeping neutral-site Eastern Illinois.
- Hitting .500 as a program in a match for the first time in over 15 years, Cal Poly volleyball was firing on all cylinders against EIU, taking the Panthers down with relative ease in straight sets and dominating offensively the whole match.
- As a huge cog in the operation, Emma Fredrick put together a big afternoon, leading all players with 17 kills while committing only two errors. She finished the weekend with 28 total kills, averaging 4.67 per set, and posted a .370 hitting percentage on 54 total attacks.
- For the third season in a row, the Mustangs will be hosting a home tournament to wrap the non-conference slate: the SLO Classic, gathering No. 12 Arizona State, Santa Clara, and No. 8 Stanford for a five-match affair.
- Following a 2:30 neutral-site between the ranked participants on Thursday to start the tourney, the Mustangs will defend their 19-match win streak in Mott against Santa Clara in the 7 p.m. home opener. Cal Poly then takes on the Sun Devils at the same time on Friday and closes the tourney with Stanford at 3 p.m. on Sunday. All info and links to watch/follow the tournament can be found HERE.
- Prior to resuming Big Sky play at Eastern Washington next Saturday, Sept. 26, Cal Poly hosts San Diego this Saturday for Homecoming. Kickoff from Mustang Memorial Field is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+ for Cal Poly (2-1), which has won five of its last six matchups with San Diego dating back to 2019.
- Seeking its first 3-0 start and first victory against an FBS opponent since 2012, Cal Poly sustained its first setback of 2026 this past Saturday with a 30-20 loss at San Jose State.
- Senior linebacker Mikey D’Amato has once again emerged as the Big Sky’s leading tackler while ranking second nationally with 36 total tackles and third with 12.0 tackles per game.
- Off to the program’s best start since 2014 – just one loss through the first seven matches – Cal Poly continues a three-game home stand against Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
- Eight different Mustangs have scored through Cal Poly’s first seven games while, defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Mathew Guerra takes a 239-minute shutout streak into Wednesday’s match. Guerra also ranks second among Pac-12 goalkeepers with a 1.00 goals against average and three shutouts.
- Looking to build off a dominant road victory last week, Cal Poly (3-2-2) travels to Seattle on Saturday to face the Redhawks to wrap up nonconference play. The match will be streamed live on ESPN+ and live stats are available HERE.
- The Mustangs cruised to a 4-1 win at Pacific in their last action on the pitch as senior captain Sophia Minnite and junior Ruby Casey both netted their first collegiate goals, while junior Isis Salazar-Ortega — a transfer from Cal State Bakersfield — scored her first goal as a Mustang and junior Miah Thomas buried her team-leading fourth goal of the season.
- The four goals were the most the Mustangs have scored in a match since Sept. 22, 2024, when they beat Nevada 5-1 on Senior Day.
- Last year when the Mustangs hosted Seattle on Senior Day, the two sides played a barnburner at Spanos Stadium. Trailing 3-1 in the second half, Cal Poly rallied to earn a 3-3 draw against the Redhawks after Julia Moore buried an equalizing goal with 10 seconds left to help the Mustangs finish a season unbeaten in nonconference play for the first time in program history.
- Seattle is 5-2-2 this season and hosts Washington State on Wednesday before facing the Mustangs. Cal Poly leads the all-time series 4-2-2 against the Redhawks.
- 29 players have seen the field for the Mustangs this season with six starting in all seven matches — senior Siena Urzua, juniors Miah Thomas, Mya Clarke and Shannon Porubski, sophomore Sam Walker and freshman Kate Nunes.
- Urzua, a team captain on the Mustang backline, leads the team in minutes played (617 minutes), playing every minute in five matches.
- After wrapping up nonconference action Saturday, Cal Poly returns home for the first time in nearly a month to host Cal Baptist on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 6 p.m. in its Big West opener.
- The Cal Poly women's golf team closed out the Leadership and Golf Invitational with a 13th-place team finish Tuesday at Chambers Bay Golf Club, highlighted by a top-20 individual showing from Maddy Saysanasongkham. Read the full recap HERE.
- Highlighted by sophomore Rafael Bobo-Lloret’s 23rd-place finish – an improvement of 15 positions during Tuesday’s final round of Kent State’s Canadian Collegiate – the Cal Poly men’s golf program finished its season-opening tournament in ninth place. Read the full recap HERE.
