FRESNO, Calif. — After letting 3-1 and 5-4 leads slip away in the middle innings, Cal Poly erupted for five runs on two home runs and three doubles in the eighth and added three more runs in the ninth for a 15-10 victory over Fresno State on Tuesday on Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The win by the Mustangs, their 18th in come-from-behind fashion this season, completed a sweep of three midweek games against the Bulldogs and gave Larry Lee his 14th 30-win season and five in the last six years.
Cal Poly, a 13-3 winner over the Bulldogs on March 10 in San Luis Obispo and 10-4 in Fresno on March 31, is 30-21 for the year while Fresno State fell to 14-35-1. The Mustangs have won 32 of their last 44 meetings against the Bulldogs and Lee is 34-14 in 24 seasons versus Fresno State.
Cal Poly finished 7-3 in midweek games, has played 15 of its last 20 contests on the road and completed an eight-game road trip with Tuesday's win in 99-degree heat.
Trailing 10-7 after seven innings, Cal Poly scored swiftly and often in the eighth.
Alejandro Garza led off with a double and Dylan Kordic belted his eighth home run of the year, a two-run shot just to the left of the batter's eye in center field. Ryan Tayman doubled and came home on Casey Murray Jr.'s fifth long ball of the season, a two-run blast to right field.
That gave Cal Poly an 11-10 lead and the Mustangs weren't finished. Jake Downing drew a walk, still with nobody out, and two batters later Gavin Spiridonoff doubled to right-center field for an RBI and a 12-10 Mustang cushion.
Freshman right-hander Sean McGrath, Cal Poly's fourth pitcher of the game, retired the Bulldogs in order in the bottom of the eighth before the Mustangs added three insurance runs in the ninth.
With two outs, Tayman struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch. Murray walked and Downing doubled down the right-field line to score Tayman. Dante Vachini singled on a hard smash back to the mound for an RBI as Murray scored and the ensuing throwing error also allowed Downing to come home.
McGrath again set the Bulldogs down in order in the bottom of the ninth for his first save. McGrath threw just 18 pitches to secure six outs.
Troy Cooper (1-0) notched his second collegiate victory, allowing two runs and four hits over 2 2/3 innings with no walks and one strikeout. The loss was charged to BJ Rodriguez (1-3) as he surrendered seven runs, including the tying and go-ahead runs in the eighth inning, and nine hits over 2 2/3 innings.
Cal Poly put together a 20-hit offensive attack, the third time the Mustangs have compiled 20 or more hits in a game this season. It was paced by Tayman, Murray and Downing with three hits each. Downing drove in a team-high three runs and has eight hits, including four doubles, and seven RBIs in his last three games.
Garza, Kordic, Vachini, Braxton Thomas and Antonio Castro all added a pair of hits apiece for Cal Poly.
Garza now has 242 hits in three seasons at Cal Poly and needs just 10 more to match Jimmy Allen’s program standard of 252, set from 2011 to 2014. The Bakersfield native now has 24 multiple-hit games this season.
Brady Hewitt, Owen Faust and Ryan De La Maza each garnered two of Fresno State's 11 hits. Both Hewitt and Faust homered for the Bulldogs.
In the three games against Fresno State this season, the Mustangs were led at the plate by Tayman (9-for-14, 10 runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, 10 RBIs), Thomas (7-for-13, two doubles, three RBIs) and Murray (5-for-12, six runs scored, two doubles, one home run, two RBIs).
Cal Poly hit .350 versus Fresno State and, with 20 hits Tuesday, lifted its team batting average for the season to .307.
The Mustangs close out the regular season with a three-game Big West series against Long Beach State this weekend inside Baggett Stadium. Game times are 6:05 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 1:05 p.m. Saturday.
Cal Poly has won eight of nine conference series so far this year and enters the weekend tied for first place with UC Santa Barbara in the Big West, both 19-8. The Gauchos host UC Riverside this weekend. UC San Diego (16-11) is third, while Cal State Fullerton and Hawai'i share fourth place with 14-13 marks.
