MALIBU, Calif. — Powered by a third-inning grand slam from Joshua Woodworth, Pepperdine salvaged one victory in a three-game midweek series against Cal Poly with a 6-3 triumph on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field Stadium.
Woodworth's four-RBI clout to center field turned a 1-0 Cal Poly lead into a 4-1 Pepperdine advantage and the Waves, who fell 12-2 and 7-3 to the Mustangs earlier this season at Baggett Stadium, held on for the non-conference win.
Pepperdine improved to 14-26 for the season while Cal Poly, which was 14-7 after a 10-game winning streak, suffered its 11th loss in its last 18 contests, falling to 21-18 for the year.
Kam Croghan (2-0), the third of six Pepperdine pitchers used in the game, tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the victory. Mustang starter Sean McGrath (2-3) suffered the loss after giving up the grand slam.
With 11 hits, Cal Poly reached double digits in that category for the seventh consecutive game.
First baseman Gavin Spiridonoff knocked in two of Cal Poly's three runs with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and a run-scoring triple in the fifth. He also singled leading off the ninth inning, but was stranded at first base.
Right fielder Dylan Kordic and second baseman Jake Downing also produced a pair of hits for the Mustangs.
Pepperdine's 13 hits included a solo home run and two singles by shortstop Julian Nunez and two hits each by second baseman Kai Laxa, left fielder Danny Cook and Woodworth.
After the grand slam by Woodworth, Cal Poly closed the gap to 4-3 with a pair of runs in the fifth frame. Xander McLaurin led off with a double, Spiridonoff's triple scored McLaurin and Downing singled to send Spiridonoff home.
Pepperdine pulled away with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Cal Poly had baserunners in each of the last four innings, but the Waves turned a pair of double plays to maintain their three-run lead.
Cal Poly returns home and resumes Big West play this weekend with a three-game series against CSUN. Game times at Baggett Stadium are 6:05 p.m. Friday, 3:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
The Mustangs own a share of first place in the conference with UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara, all 12-6 with four weekend series remaining for each team. Cal State Fullerton is fourth at 11-7 while CSUN is next at 11-10.
