LA JOLLA, Calif. — Cal Poly outhit UC San Diego 24-16. Alejandro Garza and Nate Castellon each had four hits while Cam Hoiland and Casey Murray Jr. both contributed three hits. Ryan Tayman homered and drove in four runs. The Mustangs held 3-0, 5-1, 7-3, 12-11 and 15-14 leads.
The Tritons, however, won Sunday's Big West series finale at Triton Ballpark 16-15 on a walk-off two-run single by Gabe Camacho with nobody out in the ninth inning.
The decision, coupled with UC Santa Barbara's 8-4 win at UC Irvine, leaves the Mustangs, Tritons and Gauchos in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings with four weekend series remaining for each team. All own 12-6 Big West records, one game ahead of fourth-place Cal State Fullerton (11-7), which played out of conference this weekend and lost two of three games at Oregon State.
UC San Diego, which had lost its last four Big West games prior to Sunday, now leads Cal Poly in the all-time series, 10-9, though the Mustangs clinched this weekend's series with 11-3 and 5-3 wins Friday and Saturday, respectively.
Garza went 4-for-6 at the plate with three doubles and a trio of RBIs. Castellon was 4-for-5 with three runs scored while Hoiland was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Murray went 3-for-6 while Tayman, Dylan Kordic and Gavin Spiridonoff all contributed two hits.
Tayman's 12th home run of the year, a two-run shot to right field in the fourth inning, gave Cal Poly a 7-3 lead. Kordic smashed a three-run blast, also to right field, in the ninth inning, his fifth of the year, to erase a 14-12 UC San Diego advantage.
Trailing 15-14 in the bottom of the ninth, however, the Tritons loaded the bases on two singles and a hit batsman before Camacho lined the first pitch he saw from Nick Bonn into left field with no outs to drive home the tying and winning runs.
Garza has produced multiple hits in seven of his last eight games and 13 of 18. He leads the Mustangs with 20 multiple-hit games this season and currently owns a .379 average, 110 points higher than it was six weeks ago. In his last eight contests, Garza has gone 23 of 39 at the plate (.590), extending his hitting streak to eight games, with seven doubles, one home run and nine RBIs.
Kordic was hitting .167 before the UC Riverside series four weeks ago and has elevated his average 86 points by going 12-for-33 (.364) in his last 12 games with 16 RBIs.
Jake Downing was 8-for-15 with three doubles and two RBIs in the UC San Diego series while Garza finished 8-for-17 with five doubles and six RBIs. Hoiland, Tayman and Castellon all had five hits in the three games as Cal Poly hit .390 as a team. The staff ERA, however, was 6.92, and retired the Tritons in order just three times in the series.
Devon King (3-0), the last of four UC San Diego pitchers in the game, earned the victory despite allowing five runs and seven hits over three innings. Bonn (1-3), the fifth Cal Poly pitcher in the contest, suffered the loss. Neither starter -- Corden Pettey for Cal Poly and Nic Gregson for UC San Diego -- was in the game by the fourth inning.
Delshaun Lanier, Nick Costello and Michael Crossland all homered for the Tritons.
Cal Poly has amassed double-digit hits in each of its last six games. On Sunday, the Mustangs scored in every inning except the third and sixth, and Cal Poly left 11 runners on the basepaths. The two teams combined for 31 runs, 40 hits and 372 pitches.
The Mustangs visit Pepperdine on Tuesday before returning home to host CSUN for a three-game Big West series next Friday through Sunday inside Baggett Stadium.
