SOMIS – Freshman Rafael Bobo-Lloret secured the Cal Poly men’s golf program’s fifth individual title in the past four seasons at the CSUN-hosted Bill Cullum Invitational as the Mustangs finished second in the team standings – by a single stroke.
At the 6,984-yard, par-72 Saticoy Club, Bobo-Lloret fired a two-over 74 during Tuesday’s final round to finish with an even-par 216 (73-69-74). Bobo-Lloret shared the three-round title with Utah Tech’s David Liechty before being edged in a one-hole playoff after Liechty made par on the par-three ninth hole with Bobo-Lloret bogeying.
Bobo-Lloret (Marseille, France), playing his fourth collegiate tournament, joins Baron Szeto (2023 Big West Championship medalist, two titles last season) and current junior Louis Pilod (2023 Air Force Falcon Invitational) among Cal Poly’s recent tournament champions.
As a team, Cal Poly’s three-round, 26-over 890 (305-287-298) was one shot shy of champion Cal State Fullerton.
With Cal Poly enjoying three finishers in the top 10, sophomore Nolan Kuszyk was sixth with a four-over 220 (79-67-75) while graduate student Kyle Dougherty shared 10th with an eight-over 224 (76-77-71). Dougherty improved 19 spots Tuesday with a final-round 71.
Mustang freshman Zihao Wang was 31st at 15-over 231 (77-76-78) while Jack Jarvis shared 49th.
Playing as independents, senior Sean Lehman was 16th with a 10-over 226 (73-77-76) while Pilod and fellow junior Leo Metzger placed 39th and 49th, respectively. Junior Reese Sato rounded off Cal Poly’s roster in 60th.
Cal Poly resumes tournament action at the Feb. 23-25 Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club (Palm Desert, Calif.).
