SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Competing in a field with seven teams ranked inside the top 50 nationally, Cal Poly women's golf opened its spring season with an eighth place finish as a team at the Arizona Thunderbird Intercollegiate in Tucson Tuesday.
Two Mustangs placed inside the top 13 of the individual standings at the very competitive event. As a team, Cal Poly shot 41 over par for the tournament, finishing 15 shots ahead of No. 20 Oklahoma State.
"I'm proud of how the team competed this week," head coach Courtney Roberts said. "We took some time to adjust to the course conditions, but once we settled in, we showed our grit.
The Mustangs got better in each of the three rounds they played, lowering their team score from 20 over in round one, to 13 over in round two, and finished strong at eight over in the final round.
"The course setup was demanding with long approaches into firm greens," Roberts added. "There were five top 25 teams in the field and we hung right there."
Individually, freshman Maddy Saysanasongkham and sophomore Nicole Koong both finished tied for 13th at four over par. For Saysanasongkham, she recorded her lowest total collegiate three round score at 220 after rounds of 75, 74 and 71.
Koong also finished with a total score of 220 and battled back for the 13th place finish with rounds of 78, 72, and 70. In her final round 70, she recorded five birdies including four on the front nine.
Other individual Cal Poly finishes included freshman Taylor Baker tied for 42nd at 15 over par, junior Sarah Yoo tied for 59th at 20 over par, and junior Triana Fernando 76th at 32 over par.
"We identified a few things to clean up and look forward to getting to work before our next tournament."
Cal Poly will next compete Feb. 23-24 at the Causeway Invitational in Sacramento at Del Paso Country Club.
