FULLERTON, Calif. — The Cal Poly volleyball team continued its tear through the Big West slate, extending its conference win streak to five after another sweep at Cal State Fullerton (25-19, 25-23, 25-18) on Friday night.
The Mustangs (9-6, 5-0 Big West) forced the Titans to endure a seventh straight loss, tied with UC Riverside and California Baptist for the bottom of the table, while Cal Poly now sits alone atop the Big West after UC Santa Barbara dropped a 3-1 result to joint-second-place Long Beach State.
In an unexpectedly tight match that featured a whopping 35 ties and 13 lead changes, it was easily Cal Poly’s most contested sweep statistically. The Mustangs crushed a .414 first-set clip with 15 of the 25 points being kills.
The second and third sets both flashed a much-improved CSUF squad, forcing the Mustangs to hit .143 and .200, respectively, but Cal Poly’s consistent defense on all levels of the court made the difference and forced nine errors in the second set and a collective 11 in the bookend sets.
Coming into the match, the Mustangs were hitting at a .290 clip on the season, which ranked tenth in the nation. Cal Poly dropped a few points to .287 after a sub-.240 night but still vastly outhit a struggling Cal State Fullerton offense by 110 points (.238-.128).
Senior pin Kayla Murdoch was the only Mustang with double-digit kills, collecting ten, with sophomore netfront presence Charlotte Kelly closely behind at nine kills, topping the team with a .750 hitting percentage on 12 errorless swings.
Reigning Big West Setter of the Week and junior transfer Alexis Haury supplied 32 assists but more impressively tallied her sixth double-double of the season already, coming in second on the team with ten digs. She was only bested on defense by libero Elif Hurriyet’s 11 digs.
With four sweeps in five Big West matches so far, the Mustangs look to once again stay undefeated in conference play and remain in first place at Long Beach State tomorrow as the Beach are coming off somewhat of a 3-1 upset victory over previously undefeated UC Santa Barbara. Cal Poly and Long Beach State face off at 6 p.m. inside the LBS Financial Credit Union Pyramid.
