
Cal Poly Takes Down Long Beach State at Home Saturday

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Led by three players scoring in double figures, Cal Poly women’s basketball picked up its first Big West win of the season Saturday at home inside Mott Athletics Center, taking down Long Beach State 63-49.
Freshman Charish Thompson led all Mustangs (3-11, 1-3 Big West) with 20 points, her second 20 point game of the season. Sophomore Vanessa McManus finished with 15 points and seven rebounds while sophomore Nora Perez added 11 points.
Cal Poly opened the game with a 12-4 first-quarter lead and extended the margin to as many as 12 points in the second quarter before taking a 26-18 advantage into halftime.
The Beach trimmed the deficit early in the fourth quarter, pulling within three points, but Cal Poly responded with a key scoring run to regain separation. The Mustangs pushed the lead back to double digits midway through the fourth and held Long Beach State to 13 points in the final 10 minutes to secure the win. Cal Poly outscored the Beach 21-13 in the fourth quarter and sealed the game at the free throw line, finishing 17-of-18 for the game.
Cal Poly shot 41 percent from the field and limited Long Beach State to 30 percent shooting. The Mustangs committed 11 turnovers compared to 18 by Long Beach State and turned those turnovers into 12 points. They also won the battle of points in the paint 34-10.
