FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — The Cal Poly volleyball team engaged in a hard-fought, back-and-forth match but was ultimately defeated by the (RV) Oklahoma, 3-1, in neutral-court action at Barnhill Arena on Saturday afternoon (19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 20-25)
The Sooners established an early advantage, using a strong block to build a lead and never truly relenting. Cal Poly struggled to find its offensive rhythm in the opening frame, hitting .114 as a team. Oklahoma closed out the set comfortably at 25-19, taking a 1-0 match lead.
The Mustangs' offense came alive in the second set, hitting an impressive .429 and keeping the score tight throughout. The set featured 10 ties and 5 lead changes as the two teams traded blows. With the score knotted at 22-22, Oklahoma won three consecutive points to seize the set and a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Refusing to go down without a fight, Cal Poly clawed its way back into the match in a thrilling third set that saw 16 ties and only 2 lead changes. The Mustangs' defense stepped up, and their attackers found timely kills to edge the Sooners. The hard-fought 25-23 victory extended the match.
Oklahoma responded forcefully in the fourth set, jumping out to an early 7-2 lead. Cal Poly chipped away, eventually tying the game at 13-13 and again at 17-17. However, the Sooners finished on an 8-3 run to close out the match.
Despite the loss, several Mustangs turned in strong performances. Kendall Beshear led the offense with 12 kills, while Annabelle Thalken and Emma Fredrick each added 11 kills. Emme Bullis provided 28 assists and completed a double-double with 11 digs. Ella Scott anchored the back row with a team-high 12 digs.
Cal Poly (3-3) will look to regroup as they finally come home for the first time this season with a pair of hosted tournaments over the next two weekends.
