9/11/2025 9:00:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly volleyball team delivered a commanding performance at Mott Athletics Center on Thursday night, sweeping the Northern Colorado Bears in three straight sets (25-22, 25-23, 25-18) to improve their early-season record to 4-3.
The match was a tale of offensive efficiency and stout defense for the Mustangs. Cal Poly posted their fourth .300+ hitting performance of the season and committed only five attack errors on the night, their lowest tally since a 2023 match against Nicholls State. Cal Poly's serving was also a key factor, as the team recorded eight aces. Defensively, the Mustangs won the net-front battle with eight total blocks compared to the Bears' three.
The Mustangs were led by a spectacular performance from Emma Fredrick, who finished with a match-high 15 kills on a .452 hitting clip, adding two service aces and two solo blocks. Chloe Leluge was incredibly efficient, converting six of her nine attack attempts for a .556 hitting percentage while contributing five block assists. Setter Emme Bullis orchestrated the offense masterfully with 33 assists, and Kendall Beshear anchored the back row with 12 digs while adding six kills and three service aces.
The Mustangs led for most of the first set, at one point building an eight-point advantage, though Northern Colorado mounted a late push. Cal Poly showed composure, closing with a 3-0 run capped by a kill from Fredrick and a Bears attack error to take a 25-22 opening set victory.
The second set was far more dramatic, featuring 13 ties and six lead changes as neither team could build a significant advantage in the back-and-forth affair. With the score tied at 23-23, Cal Poly again found the crucial points under pressure. A kill from Leluge and another Northern Colorado attack error sealed the 25-23 victory, giving the Mustangs a commanding 2-0 match lead.
Riding the momentum of two narrow wins, Cal Poly battled tightly with the Bears once more before pulling away after the media timeout. Leading 15-14, the Mustangs launched a 10-4 run to close out the match. Their service game came alive with four aces in the set alone, helping complete the sweep with a 25-18 win.
Cal Poly now welcomes the Cal Golden Bears to Mott Athletics Center on Friday at 6:00 p.m. for the second match of the Mustang Invitational. For the first time this season, the Mustangs will be available to watch on ESPN+.
