Halladay Nets Brace in Season-Opening Draw at San Diego
8/14/2025 11:30:00 PM | Women's Soccer
The Mustangs went into enemy territory and took a one goal lead three separate times, but the Toreros fought back each time and leveled the match at 3-3 with just over eight minutes remaining to force a season-opening draw between the two teams.
"I'm really proud of the team's effort today," first-year head coach Bernardo Silva said after the game. "I think we all want things to be perfect right away and at the start of the season but it takes time, it takes us building a really good foundation … and we're going to continue to work and we're going to learn from this game."
Cal Poly struck first just over 10 minutes into the match when Halladay intercepted a pass, made her way around the USD goalkeeper and sent a shot into the bottom right of the net on a tight angle.
The Toreros equalized the match in the 32nd minute and the match went into the half knotted at 1-1. Cal Poly outshot San Diego 9-6 in the opening 45 minutes.
In the opening moments of the second half, the Mustangs came out hungry for a goal and their aggressiveness paid off just over five minutes into the final 45. Sophomore Kiki Vostermans sent a perfect corner kick from the right side to the far past and freshman Farra Franklin rose up and headed the ball to the back of the net. It was a Mustang debut to remember for Franklin, who tallied her first collegiate goal while making her first career start. It was the fifth assist of Vostermans' career, who led the Mustangs in assists last season as a true freshman.
Cal Poly clung to that 2-1 lead for 27 minutes before USD squared the match up at 2-2 in the 78th minute. Then just over a minute later, the Mustangs earned a corner and executed yet another perfect set piece. This time, graduate student Madelyn Dougherty — who spent the past three seasons took the corner kick from the right side and sent a ball to the middle of the box that Halladay soared through the air to head into the net past the San Diego goalkeeper. It was Halladay's first career multi-goal game and Silva said the forward put on an absolute clinic in the season opener. The Los Gatos, Calif. native now has 11 goals in her collegiate career.
"She's a warrior," Silva said about Halladay. "Every single day that I get to work with her is a blessing and I think she's an example for everybody on this team of what passion for the game looks like, so I'm really happy for her two goals, and it's two of many coming up, so the Big West has got to watch out."
The Toreros equalized the match for the final time just 2:25 after Halladay's second goal to force the contest to end in a draw.
The Mustangs finished with a 20-12 shot advantage in the match and Halladay registered a game-high eight shots, sending three on frame. Junior Annika Smith tallied five shots.
Franklin and fellow freshmen Addie Crosno and Sam Walker all made their collegiate debuts in the match, while Dougherty, redshirt junior goalkeeper Alyssa Szarlacki and sophomores Ava Mirelez and Ruby Casey all made their first appearances as Mustangs.
Szarlacki made three saves in net in her first start as a Mustang.
Cal Poly returns to San Luis Obispo to host its home opener at 6 p.m. on Monday against BYU, who has made it to the NCAA national semifinals twice in the last four years and is receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches Preseason Poll. You can purchase tickets to the match HERE.
