Larry Lee Earns 700th Career Win as Mustangs Take Series
5/3/2025 11:30:00 PM | Baseball
Alejandro Garza broke the deadlock with an RBI double, Casey Murray Jr. and Cam Hoiland followed with run-scoring singles and a Roadrunner error plus a wild pitch accounted for the final two runs in the decisive rally.
Cal Poly added two more runs in the sixth for a 9-1 advantage on Garza's grounder to shortstop and an RBI single by Nate Castellon, who finished with his second four-hit game of the season, all singles.
With the win, Cal Poly gained another game on front-running UC Irvine in the Big West standings. The Anteaters fell to 19-4, two games in front of the Mustangs (17-6), with a 4-0 loss to UC San Diego. Cal State Fullerton is third at 16-7 following its 10-4 triumph over UC Santa Barbara.
Cal Poly (30-15) reached the 30-win mark overall Saturday night, the quickest since its 2014 Big West Conference championship season and the 13th time under Lee, who is 700-548-2 since becoming head coach of the Mustangs in the summer of 2002 and is 38th on the NCAA Division I list for active head coaches with his 700 wins.
Sophomore southpaw Josh Volmerding (5-3) worked out of a first-inning jam, allowing the first four batters to reach base for a run before a strikeout and double play ended the threat.
Volmerding tossed five scoreless innings after that, finishing with nine strikeouts and scattering six hits with one walk, lowering his ERA to 4.81. He has struck out eight or more batters four times this season, his career high of 11 established in the game against UC Irvine last weekend.
Chris Downs, another sophomore lefty, earned a three-inning save, his third of the year, with a pair of strikeouts.
Castellon, who singled three times in Friday's 4-1 series-opening victory, is now 7-for-9 in the series with one more game to be played Sunday at 1 o'clock as Cal Poly seeks its fifth series sweep in Big West play this season.
Garza, Murray and Hoiland all contributed three hits apiece as Cal Poly outhit Cal State Bakersfield 16-11. One of Garza's hits was a double and he has a team-leading 26 multiple-hit games this season. Murray has 12 and Hoiland six.
Both teams scored a run in a 25-minute first inning. Castellon's single through the right side of the Roadrunner infield gave Cal Poly the early lead and Tyler Leroy answered with a run-scoring single for Cal State Bakersfield.
Held scoreless for eight innings Friday night, Cal Poly took control of Saturday's game with its six-run third-inning rally thanks to five hits, a walk, an error and a wild pitch. The Mustangs have scored two or more runs in an inning 74 times this season.
Making key contributions defensively for Cal Poly on Saturday were Murray with a diving catch in left-center field to rob Evan Cloyd of extra bases in the second inning and right fielder Dylan Kordic, who notched his second outfield assist in as many games, ending the contest with a strong throw to get Nick Mascaro after the Roadrunner outfielder rounded the base too far following his two-run double in the ninth.
Cloyd, who was hit by a pitch twice Friday, duplicated the feat Saturday and leads the nation, having been hit by a pitch 30 times in 48 games.
The loss was charged to Cal State Bakersfield starter Shane McAlinden (1-6) as the sophomore right-hander gave up seven runs and seven hits in 2 2/3 innings with three walks and one strikeout.
Sophomore right-hander Ethan Marmie (4-3, 5.40 ERA) will start Sunday's game on the mound for Cal Poly. Cal State Bakersfield will go with junior righty Jacob Gutierrez (3-5, 7.32 ERA), who gave up two runs and a pair of hits over two-thirds of an inning against the Mustangs on Friday night.
