SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — The Cal Poly baseball team is headed to the Beaver State.
Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs, who captured their second Big West Conference title Sunday afternoon with a 6-4 triumph over top-seeded UC Irvine, will face Big 12 Conference champion Arizona in the opening round of the Eugene Regional hosted by Oregon.
The game will be played Friday at PK Park, with first pitch set for 1 p.m.
Cal Poly wrapped up the regular season with a 41-17 record by winning four of five games in the Big West Conference Championships at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field, including a 2-1 mark versus the Anteaters. UC Irvine will play Arizona State in the Los Angeles Regional with Fresno State facing host UCLA.
Arizona (39-18) posted a 3-0 mark in the Big 12 Tournament at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, with wins over BYU, West Virginia and TCU in a 2-1 decision Saturday.
The Wildcats finished tied for fourth place with Kansas State in the 14-team Big 12 Tournament with an 18-12 mark. Arizona earned series wins over San Diego, Pepperdine, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, BYU, TCU and Houston while falling to Baylor, Utah and Texas Tech.
Oregon (42-14), seeded 12th overall, meets Utah Valley (32-27) in the other first-round game of the Eugene Regional on Friday at 6 p.m. Oregon finished tied for first with UCLA in the Big Ten regular season standings and went 1-1 in the Big Ten Tournament at Omaha while Utah Valley finished tied for third in the Western Athletic Conference standings but went 4-0 in the WAC Tournament at Mesa, Ariz., topping Abilene Christian 11-9 in the title game Saturday.
Winner of the Eugene Regional will play the Chapel Hill Regional winner in the Super Regional round in two weeks. North Carolina is the No. 5 national seed and will host Holy Cross, Nebraska and Oklahoma.
Cal Poly swept a three-game series versus Utah Valley in 2021 at Baggett Stadium and also beat the Wolverines 8-6 in Surprise, Ariz., in 2010. The Mustangs last faced Arizona in 1969, losing twice, and Oregon in 1974, splitting four games in the series.
"We haven't really dug into it yet, just some preliminary stuff," Lee said of the Eugene Regional pairings. "We're just trying to get there and hope everything runs smoothly.
"Once you get to this point in the season, everyone is good," Lee added. "With Oregon and Arizona in the field, it's going to be a tough regional, but all regionals are across the country at this point."
Cal Poly played five games over four days in the Big West Championships, bouncing back from a 15-5 loss to UC Irvine with three consecutive wins to claim its second conference title in Lee's 23 seasons at the helm of the Mustangs.
"This past week really prepped us for what lies ahead," said Lee. "We played five times in four days with three straight elimination games and it's a similar setup in the regionals. Everyone has gone through it and understands how valuable each out is and how you have to just stay in the ballgame, stay in the moment.
"We were up 4-0 and gave up four runs to tie the game in the latter half. The reality is that it's just like a 0-0 game with so many innings left to play, a shortened game to win a championship. You can't get caught up in the emotion and there is no such thing as momentum unless it's on our side."
There are 29 conference champions and 35 at-large entries in the 64-team field.
All regionals are four-team double-elimination events Friday through Monday. The Super Regional round is set for June 6-9 with eight best-of-three series and the College World Series at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha is scheduled for June 13-23.
Cal Poly will compete in its fourth NCAA Division I Regional, all under Lee, this weekend. The Mustangs played in the 2009 (Arizona State), 2013 (UCLA) and 2014 (Cal Poly) regionals, posting a 2-2 mark in the latter event after capturing their first Big West title.
