SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — For the first time in four seasons, the Cal Poly baseball team is ranked in the national polls. It is also the second occasion in program history that the Mustangs ended the year in the top 25.
Thanks to a Big West regular season title, second straight Big West tournament championship, fifth trip to an NCAA Regional and first NCAA Super Regional appearance in program history, Coach Larry Lee's Mustangs finished 19th in both the D1Baseball.com and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls and 23rd in both the Baseball America and USA Today Coaches polls.
All four major college baseball polls were released Tuesday.
"The final rankings just let you know that you advanced as the season progressed and are relevant in the college baseball landscape," said Lee, who wrapped up his 24th season as head coach earlier this month. "The goal is for this to be the 'norm' for any given year."
Cal Poly, which was ranked as high as No. 17 midway through the 2022 season before falling back, finished in a final top 25 poll once before, ranked No. 18 by the NCBWA in 2014 and 19th or 20th in the other four major polls. That year, the Mustangs earned their first Big West title and hosted the San Luis Obispo Regional at Baggett Stadium.
Also in 2014, Cal Poly was ranked No. 1 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper for one week after sweeping Cal State Fullerton at home and improving its record to 34-5. The Mustangs also won their next two games before losing twice in a three-game series at Long Beach State.
Cal Poly has earned several other lofty national rankings during the regular season.
The Mustangs were ranked No. 12 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and Baseball America after jumping to a 17-4 start in 2009 and Cal Poly was ranked No. 16 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in 2013.
In 2016, Cal Poly was No. 19 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll in late April before the Mustangs were swept at Long Beach State. Six years later, Cal Poly was back in the national polls, ranked as high as No. 17 in 2022.
