Mustangs Sprint Past Cal State Fullerton to Advance in Big West Championship

FULLERTON, Calif. — Cal Poly's top two hitters in the batting order, Zach Daudet and Ryan Fenn, combined for seven hits, and Griffin Naess earned his seventh win of the season with 6 2/3 scoreless innings as Cal Poly defeated Cal State Fullerton 7-2 in the first round of the Big West Conference Baseball Championships Thursday night at Goodwin Field.
Fenn earned his first four-hit game of the year with a double and three singles, driving in two runs, while Daudet singled three times and scored twice for the Mustangs, who beat the Titans for the fourth time this season and improved to 38-16 overall.
Designated hitter Cam Hoiland also had three hits, one RBI, and two runs scored for Cal Poly, which plays top-seeded UC Irvine in the winner's bracket final Friday at 3 p.m. The Anteaters (40-13) held on to beat Hawai'i 7-5 in Thursday's other first-round contest.
Fenn extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a first-inning single and added a run-scoring single in the second, an RBI double in the fifth, and another single in the sixth. Fenn now has 23 multiple-hit contests this season.
Fenn's only other game with more than three hits was a 5-for-6 performance against UNLV in 2024. He has produced six straight multi-hit games (17-for-27, .630) and is 30-for-58 (.517) during his hitting streak.
Daudet singled in the first, fifth, and eighth innings for his 15th multiple-hit game of the year.
Also extending hitting streaks Thursday were third baseman Alejandro Garza with a fifth-inning single to stretch his run to 13 games and center fielder Casey Murray Jr. with a solo home run leading off the second inning.
Murray's seventh homer of the year extended his hitting streak to 11 games and briefly lifted his batting average over the .300 mark for the first time this year while Garza has hit safely in 33 of his last 34 contests.
Left fielder Dante Vachini added a run-scoring double in the second inning and an RBI single in the sixth. Vachini, 10-for-14 in last week's UC Riverside series, is 20-for-36 (.556) in his last nine games with a pair of four-hit contests and a six-game hitting streak.
With a 15-hit offensive attack, Cal Poly reached double figures for the 35th time in its last 47 games and improved its team batting average to .321.
Meanwhile, Naess fashioned his eighth quality start of the season — three or fewer runs allowed over six innings or more — and equaled his win total of a year ago by scattering eight hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Thursday's effort was his fourth without allowing a run this season.
Naess, who took a no-hitter into the ninth inning against Cal State Fullerton a year ago at Goodwin Field and notched another quality start against the Titans on March 7 with three runs allowed over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision, is 14-2 in his career as a Mustang.
Senior southpaw Jake Torres secured the final seven outs in relief of Naess, though he allowed solo home runs to Matthew Bardowell and Andrew Kirchner in the eighth frame.
The loss was charged to Mikiah Negrete (5-3), who gave up five runs and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings with one walk and five strikeouts.
Cal Poly led all the way in the fourth meeting between the two teams this season, scoring a run in the first and three in the second for an early 4-0 advantage. Single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings gave the Mustangs a 7-0 cushion.
Cal State Fullerton (29-26), which had won 24 of its last 36 games following a 5-13 start, collected 11 hits against Cal Poly, including two each by Carter Johnstone, Eli Lopez, and Paul Contreras.
Sophomore southpaw Josh Volmerding (5-4, 5.09 ERA) of Cal Poly is expected to face UC Irvine sophomore right-hander Trevor Hansen (8-2, 3.14 ERA) on Friday.
Cal State Fullerton meets Hawai'i (34-20) in an elimination game Friday night at 7.
