RENO – Sitting in second place overall at the NCAA Regional following the completion of the suspended first round Tuesday afternoon, Cal Poly men’s golf senior Baron Szeto dropped to 22nd position with 14 holes completed during a second round halted by darkness Tuesday evening.
With Monday’s scheduled opening round at the par-72, 7,452-yard Montreux Golf & Country Club limited to just two hours of play due to high winds, Szeto completed the initial 18 holes early Tuesday afternoon with a two-under 70. He recorded par on his initial 16 holes before posting birdie on the final two to climb two shots behind leader Paul Chang of Virginia.
With the second round starting immediately after the first was completed, Szeto carded four bogeys and a double bogey late Tuesday afternoon before securing a final birdie.
With four holes remaining in the second round, Szeto is tied for 22nd in the 70-player field at three-over. Cal Poly’s first NCAA Regional competitor in 10 years, Szeto – the nation’s 101st-ranked player with two tournament titles during the regular season – is just six shots behind second-place Luke Potter of Texas with 22 holes remaining.
To qualify for the May 23-28 NCAA Championship, Szeto would need to be the highest finisher in the field not from one of the five programs advancing to the NCAA Championship.
The remainder of the second round gets underway at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning before the field launches into the third round.
