“On the surface, Jake’s elite three-point shooting shows he’s an excellent fit for our system. I’m most excited about his cultural fit. He’s committed to excellence in the classroom and on the court. He’ll have an immediate positive impact with his approach as we continue to build our culture. He comes from a great program that shares many of our values so he’ll fit in well with our returning players. And did I mention, he can really shoot!”-- Mike DeGeorge, Cal Poly Head Coach
SAN LUIS OBISPO – One of the nation’s top three-point shooting sides under head coach Mike DeGeorge last season, the Cal Poly men’s basketball program bolstered its perimeter scoring recently with the transfer addition of 6-4 guard Jake Davis from two-year West Valley College.
“On the surface, Jake’s elite three-point shooting shows he’s an excellent fit for our system,” said DeGeorge, whose 2024-25 Mustang squad finished third among 355 NCAA Division I programs with 11.5 three-pointers per game and 19th with 82.1 points per matchup. “I’m most excited about his cultural fit. He’s committed to excellence in the classroom and on the court. He’ll have an immediate positive impact with his approach as we continue to build our culture. He comes from a great program that shares many of our values so he’ll fit in well with our returning players. And did I mention, he can really shoot!”
A starter in all 31 games for West Valley last season, Davis – who has two years of eligibility remaining – finished second among Coast-South Conference players with a 50.3 (88-for-175) percent three-point mark and fourth at 14.9 points per game.
Scoring in double digits 26 times last season while shooting 48.3 (157-for-325) percent from the floor, Davis helped West Valley to a 27-4 record, a 12-0 Coast-South record and a quarterfinal appearance in the CCCAA State Championship tournament.
Davis will also be reunited under Cal Poly assistant coach Sam Walters, who arrived after two years as an assistant at West Valley, including a 2023-24 campaign in which the Vikings captured the CCCAA State Championship title with a 33-0 mark.
“Jake brings skill, toughness and leadership to Cal Poly,” said Walters, who coached Davis as a freshman. “He took a route to the Division I level that a lot of people didn’t believe in. He takes pride in his work ethic and understands the game. Jake’s been a joy to be around the last few years and I can’t wait to see him in a Cal Poly uniform.”
A 47.5 (115-for-242) percent three-point shooter for West Valley and a native of Walnut Creek, Calif., Davis averaged 19.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game during his 2022-23 senior season at Las Lomas HS.
Bringing his sharpshooting skills to Mott Athletics Center this fall, please welcome 6-4 guard Jake Davis to the Cal Poly men's basketball program!#RideHigh pic.twitter.com/buDb2MUodP
