NAPA – Sophomore Reese Sato (above) emerged as the Cal Poly men’s golf program’s leader at the Bridgestone Collegiate Invitational following Monday’s opening 36 holes as three Mustangs sit inside the top 30 heading into Tuesday’s final round.
At the 6,859-yard, par 72 Silverado Country Club and Resort North Course, Sato followed an opening-round 75 with three afternoon birdies and a second-round 71. Sato sits 21st on the leaderboard with a two-over 146.
Senior Baron Szeto – the nation’s 111th ranked player – and freshman Nolan Kuszyk share 26th position with three-over 145s. Szeto enjoyed two birdies during both the morning and afternoon rounds while Kuszyk carded three total birdies during the opening 36 holes.
Senior Parker Mapes recorded five birdies during the opening round, but finished with triple and double bogeys for a one-over 73. He added a second-round 76 and enters the final round in 34th spot with a five-over 149.
Junior Sean Lehman also carded two birdies in each round and is 45th with a seven-over 151 while sophomore Leo Metzger’s two-round 154 places him 55th.
As a program, Cal Poly sits ninth in the 14-team field with a two-round, 13-over 589. The Mustangs are just six shots back of sixth-place UC Davis.
Final-round action gets underway Tuesday morning.
