SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Junior Kennedy Buntrock has been named the Big West Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the second time in her career, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Buntrock is the first Mustang to receive the weekly honor since she won the award for the first time on April 25, 2023.
The Henderson, Nevada native went 2-1 in both singles and doubles this past week across three matches for the Mustangs.
In a commanding 7-0 victory at UC Riverside on Friday, Buntrock went undefeated in singles and doubles while playing at the No. 1 spot in both, winning 6-0 in doubles and 6-2, 6-2 in singles.
Buntrock picked up a straight set singles victory in a 5-2 loss at Long Beach State on Saturday, and then in a 4-3 home win over LMU on Monday, captured up a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 doubles spot while playing alongside partner Romane Mosse, helping the tandem improve to 6-3 on the season.
With 33 career dual doubles victories, Buntrock currently sits in a tie for 18th all-time in Cal Poly history.
Last year, Buntrock became the fifth player in program history to win a set in the NCAA Tournament when she emerged victorious in the second set of her match against No. 11 USC 6-2 while playing at the No. 6 spot.
The 56th-ranked Mustangs (10-3, 2-1 Big West) host a pair of matches this weekend at the Ronca Tennis Center. Cal Poly takes on Santa Clara first at noon Saturday, before welcoming CSUN to San Luis Obispo on Sunday for its Big West home opener at noon. During Saturday's match, the Cal Poly women's tennis team is partnering with the Nephrotic Syndrome Foundation to hold a special Nephrotic Syndrome Awareness Day. Nephrotic syndrome is a rare kidney disease that the program's 9-year-old Team Impact member Brooke Fritz is currently fighting.
