Cal Poly Offense Explodes in Home Opener to Sink Pirates
3/1/2025 12:15:00 AM | Baseball
True freshman Vachini (4-for-5) tied for the sixth-most single-game RBIs in Division I program history, providing a fantastic boost to an offense that has otherwise struggled to find consistency thus far in the season.
Vachini helped leave Mustang fans with no reservations about the offense's ability to take over games. Cal Poly scored in seven of its eight offensive innings, four of which were multi-run stretches.
Including Vachini, four Mustangs recorded multiple RBIs, and three players enjoyed multi-run and multi-hit nights. Jack Collins (2-for-5) increased his hitting streak to eight games and notched a pair of doubles, while both he and Alejandro Garza picked up a trio of RBIs. In total, the Mustangs tallied six extra-base hits.
Reigning Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year Griffin Naess looked like his prime 2024 self again with an incredible appearance. The righty not only earned the win but sat seven Pirates on strikes, tying his single-game career high, while only allowing two hits in a scoreless, six-inning start.
Kicking off the scoring in the bottom of one, leadoff hitter Vachini slapped one over to the second baseman, forcing a fielding error on a bad hop just over the glove. Vachini advanced twice, once on a wild pitch and again on Garza's groundout. Collins then nearly crushed a shot over the 405-feet center field numbers, but it stayed in the park for an RBI double.
In the second, Cam Hoiland walked to lead off and Braxton Thomas blooped one over second base and into the shallow outfield for runners on the corners early. Nate Castellon put a ball in play to the shortstop, who completed the double play but Hoiland still crossed to increase Cal Poly's lead to 2-0.
Zach Daudet picked up a two-out double to extend the inning, and he was brought in by Dante Vachini's hit to center field, putting the Mustangs up by a trio of runs through two innings.
Casey Murray Jr. singled down the left field line in the third to score Garza but was thrown out after attempting to stretch the hit into extra bases. Still, that was Cal Poly's third consecutive inning scoring runs for a 4-0 lead.
After a first inning that racked up his pitch count, Griffin Naess began to heat up and settle in, going the next three innings with a pair of strikeouts in each, accumulating six by the fourth inning.
The Mustangs forced an early exit in the fourth for Seton Hall's starting pitcher after Braxton Thomas and Nate Castellon got on the corners, and the reliever loaded the bases by hitting Daudet in the shoulder. Vachini unloaded on one perfectly down the right field line and into the corner, clearing the bases on an RBI triple and bringing Vachini to four RBIs in this game.
Continuing the fourth-inning onslaught was Ryan Fenn's double that increased the Mustang lead to eight before Alejandro Garza's sac fly for a 9-0 lead. The extra-base hits kept coming as Cam Hoiland, in his first start this year, doubled to bring Murray Jr. around for Cal Poly's first double-digit run game of 2025.
For the fifth, Vachini smacked his fifth RBI on the game and fourth in the last two innings with a single to left-center, putting the Mustangs up 11 before Cal Poly went up by another 12 as Garza did the same. At that point, every starting Mustang batter had picked up a hit in the game, eight had runs, and six had RBIs.
By the sixth inning, Naess continued building his stellar start against Seton Hall, sitting nine straight Pirates from innings three to five.
Hoiland, Castellon, and Daudet all walked in the sixth with just one out in the middle of that stretch, bringing up Vachini who singled to right-center for his sixth RBI of the night. The runs kept flowing in the sixth with Fenn picking up his second RBI of the game while Garza and Collins reached three RBI to bring Cal Poly's lead to 17. The Mustangs began to rotate pinch hitters and fielders in
A defensive replacement for Ryan Fenn in the top of seven, Jake Downing picked up a hit and RBI in his third career at-bat, scoring Daudet for the 18th run of the night.
Seton Hall finally broke through with a trio of runs on a single and double to center, lessening Cal Poly's lead to 18-3. The Pirates increased that to a four-run inning with a third consecutive two-out hit. However, no rally would be coming as Cal Poly was too far ahead and closed the game without worry.
The Mustangs and Pirates face off twice on Saturday with the doubleheader set for 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM before the series finishes on Sunday at 1:00 PM.
