SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — A Pac-12 showdown will take place inside Mott Athletics Center on Friday night when Cal Poly wrestling battles Oregon State.
The pivotal conference dual starts at 7 p.m. Friday and the Mustangs are looking to receive plenty of support and noise from the Cal Poly student body. To encourage an electric atmosphere, the team is offering $500 to the student organization with the highest attendance at Friday’s dual. As always, admission is free for Cal Poly students.
Tickets to the Pac-12 opener for the Mustangs can be purchased HERE. The dual will be streamed live on the Cal Poly wrestling X/Twitter account (@CalPolyWrestle) and on FloWrestling with Mike Malinconico on the call.
LAST TIME ON THE MAT: Cal Poly is fresh off a 26-16 home victory over SIUE on Sunday that helped the team improve to 4-6 in duals this season. In the win, the Mustangs emerged victorious in seven of the 10 matches, securing three victories by decision, two by major decision and one by fall in their first home dual since Dec. 19.
Redshirt sophomore Cash Stewart grabbed the lone fall for the Mustangs in impressive fashion, using a cradle to pin SIUE’s at 4:21 in their match at 174 pounds. Redshirt junior Chance Lamer kept his undefeated record intact with a dominant showing, earning five takedowns and 2:36 of riding time en route to a 17-5 major decision. The performance allowed the two-time NCAA Round of 12 qualifier to improve to 11-0. Chance is currently one of 24 wrestlers in Division I that is still undefeated this season.
TOP 15 STANGS: Cal Poly remained at No. 15 in the country in the latest InterMat Team Tournament rankings released this week. Two weeks ago, the Mustangs climbed to No. 15 in the rankings, marking the program’s highest national ranking in three years. On Feb. 22, 2022, the Mustangs checked in at No. 10 in the same rankings, marking the first time in 39 years the program achieved a top 10 ranking. Cal Poly has steadily climbed up the InterMat rankings throughout the season thanks to some stellar performances, earning a top 25 national ranking as a team for the fifth straight season.
INDIVIDUAL RANKINGS: Five Cal Poly wrestlers continued to be ranked, led by redshirt sophomore Zeth Romney. The Simi Valley, Calif. native is ranked No. 2 nationally at 133 pounds, according to InterMat and the first edition of the NCAA Coaches rankings. Romney improved to 12-1 this season with a win by decision in Sunday’s dual with SIUE and has shined every time he’s stepped on the mat this year. In December, Romney won the 133-pound title at the prestigious Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, defeating four nationally ranked opponents en route to becoming the first Mustang in 15 years to capture a championship in that weight class at the tournament. That showing helped him garner Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week honors for the fourth time in his career and second time this season.
Chance is the next highest ranked Mustang, checking in at No. 6 at 149 pounds. Redshirt junior Luka Wick is No. 22 at 165 pounds with a 9-4 record, redshirt junior Trevor Tinker is No. 22 at heavyweight with a 17-5 record and redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman is currently No. 31 at 125 pounds with a 16-8 mark.
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS: Oregon State is coming off a 25-16 home victory over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, improving its Pac-12 record to 1-1 on the year. The Beavers are 2-7 in duals this season with their only other victory coming on Nov. 8 against North Dakota State 35-6. OSU currently has five nationally ranked wrestlers and 149-pounder Ethan Stiles was named Pac-12 Wrestler of the Week for the second time this season after earning major decisions over No. 7 Jaden Abas from Stanford and Cal State Bakersfield’s Brock Rogers this past weekend. Friday’s dual will mark the 56th all-time meeting between the two programs with Cal Poly coming up just short to the Beavers last year in Corvallis 21-17.
NEXT UP: Next Friday, Feb. 14 at Mott Athletics Center, Cal Poly will host its final two home duals of the season when the Mustangs take on Northern Illinois at 5:30 p.m. and Pac-12 rival Little Rock at 7 p.m. Prior to the Northern Illinois dual, Cal Poly will honor its 2024-25 senior class.
