SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Graduate student Legend Lamer and redshirt sophomore Koda Holeman both captured upset victories over nationally ranked opponents, but Cal Poly wrestling fell short in a hard-fought battle with Oregon State 23-12 on Friday night at Mott Athletics Center.
The Mustangs (4-7, 0-1 Pac-12) may have dropped their Pac-12 opener, but several wrestlers had some incredible individual performances in front of an electric home crowd.
Holeman helped the Mustangs get off to a roaring start in the dual with a stellar victory at 125 pounds. With the score tied 1-1 after three periods, Holeman — ranked No. 31 in the country — secured a takedown just over a minute into overtime to grab a 4-1 decision over No. 11 Maximo Renteria from Oregon State. The win brought the entire crowd to its feet and helped him improve to 17-8 overall this season and 9-2 in duals.
With Cal Poly trailing 12-2 after four matches, Legend kept the Mustangs in it with an upset victory of his own at 157 pounds. The Corvallis, Ore. native used 1:44 of riding time to secure a 2-1 decision over No. 25 CJ Hamblin from Oregon State. He improved to 11-8 on the year with the win.
After back-to-back losses by decision at 165 and 174, redshirt freshman Daschle Lamer stepped on the mat looking to build some momentum for the Mustangs. Daschle earned two takedowns and a reversal en route to a 9-4 decision over TJ McDonnell to move to 10-7 on the year.
Following a technical fall by the Beavers (3-7, 2-1 Pac-12) at 197 pounds to clinch the dual, redshirt junior Trevor Tinker took center stage and ended things on a high note for the Mustangs. The 22nd-ranked heavyweight in the country absolutely dominated No. 23 Brett Mower from OSU, using three takedowns and an astonishing 4:47 of riding time to roll to a 12-1 victory. Tinker improved to 18-5 overall and 9-1 in duals this season.
No. 6 Chance Lamer at 149 pounds dropped a tight 4-2 decision to No. 16 Ethan Stiles to suffer his first loss of the season, while redshirt junior Luka Wick — ranked No. 22 in his weight class — fell in sudden victory at 165 pounds. At 133 pounds, true freshman Anthony Lucio battled incredibly hard wrestling in his first career dual, but dropped a 7-4 decision.
Cal Poly remains at home to host its final two home duals of the season next Friday, Feb. 14 at Mott Athletics Center. The Mustangs will battle Northern Illinois first at 5:30 p.m. before capping the night at 7 p.m. against Pac-12 rival Little Rock. Prior to the Northern Illinois dual, Cal Poly will honor its 2024-25 senior class.
